So I fired up my copy of TDS last night for another runthrough, and eventually got to Stonemarket, and then...
...all hell broke loose.
I know why it happened, and I know how it happened: I made three big mistakes.
Mistake #1: When I triggered the "pretend Garrett" conversation, I neglected to knock out the impersonator when he left the room.
Mistake #2: I didn't knock out the two crooks outside the Hammer church.
Mistake #3: I robbed the upstairs section of the gemcutter's shop, triggering the "bad guys killing the gemcutter" event.
The result: The crooks killed the gemcutter...in front of an open door facing the street, right under a burning torch. Everyone walking past came over to see the dead body, and then ran for the city watchmen. The ruckus attracted both the thug that's robbing the armorer's shop and the thieves outside the Hammer church, along with every other lunkhead that's wandering the area. They all came together in the street, and the crooks killed EVERYONE. I never realized just how tough those thugs were before. So much for my personal "no kills" goal...

That's almost as funny as how Gamall and her statues will slaughter everyone until the hammer and pagan mages get her stuck in invisible mode.

Slaughter in Stonemarket sounds like a good name for a fan mission.

I was thinking that it'd be a good band name...
