i have made it all the way through this damned game and i am traveling from the old quarter (after visiting the keeper library) to audale to find the hag's lair. when i trans from old quarter to audale the screen turns black, minimizes and says it has to close (reports a problem to microsoft, etc.). anyone had this experience before? i'd hate to scrap all the hard work...

I haven't experienced that, but try various things: try to clear out your inventory; save in various places before portal - load and try to cross it then; leave the old quarter, go to south quarter, docks or stonemarket, maybe even to pavelock prison, save, load, and make all the way back, etc.

I've seen it mentioned, but I can't remember what the solution was.
Something to do with a broken script on an object in Auldale IIRC.
