Speaking of arcade racers populated by douchey characters, I tried running Need For Speed: Most Wanted the other day. The goofy campaign FMVs refused to play. :( My game disc is in another city, so I can't attempt a proper reinstallation.

Heh. Test Drive 2 was the first racing game I ever played. Back on my dad's PC... when I was like 10 or something. Good times. TD1 even had racing critique - 'you drive like my grandmother. Better watch out, potholes ahead.' Or something like that.

I had Test Drive for the Commodore 64, but I could never get it to run. I only got to the part where you got to select car, I think it was either Ferrari or Porsche. Then the windshield would lower and a cool guy with shades would be visible in the car, grinning from ear to ear. Then he'd speed of and the game would start loading again. The problem with my cassette was that it never stopped loading. :(

Actually, the series (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Test_Drive_%28series%29) never really went away, just got progressively worse over the years, until it was handed to Eden Games who brought the series back to it's prime with TDU.
