Valve is now giving away Team Fortress 2, free to everyone. For absolutely no money, you get a free access account - smaller backpack, no cosmetics, limited trades. One purchase from the in game store, and you're bumped up to a 'premium account', which up til today was the only account there was.
Considering the cheapest item in the MannCo store is like a buck fifty, it's one hell of a bargain.
But boy oh boy, can I hear the "WTF TF2 IS AN MMO!WTFVALVE!" from the Steam forums already.

I still play TF2 on a regular basis, but it'll be interesting to watch the reactions around the net for this. Doesn't matter that Valve has released tons of new content over the years for absolutely free, people will still find some reason to bitch.
I'm just happy Meet the Medic is finally out, along with all the new "Uber Update" weapons and the new level.

The biggest question is whether it's going to cause a giant influx of cheaters and griefers using disposable account. Valve says they've got something in place to stop that. We'll see if it works - if not, I expect 'free to play' to die very quickly. There will be a no free players server mod within a week, and if there's any cheater influx, free players will end up discovering they can't play on any sever.
Beyond that, I'm hearing rumblings that they new items have issues. The new minigun apparently lets you move full speed while shooting if you bunny hop.

People are already reporting that?
I just finished downloading the uber update and my favourite servers still haven't updated.
Regardless, most of the updates have had an issue or two to start with, with fixes within a couple days.

You beat me to the thread, but forgot the link:
(
http://www.teamfortress.com/freetoplay/)
The FAQ page there has more details.
I'd say part of the reason Valve are doing this is because they realised they make far more money on the in-game item shop than they ever did selling the game - plus, TF2 has always been their flagship product to encourage new users to try Steam.

I've yet to manage bunny hopping with the new minigun (I'll keep trying though).
I can confirm however, that the new minigun is fantastic, and more than makes up for the shitpile that was the Brass Beast.

And here I thought it couldn't get any worse. Go Valve

Can you start your own server with the free version? I might be able to get some casual friends of mine to play this, but they're way too sheltered to take on the Internet at this.
My TF2 story, played it around a year, liked it. Got confused and lost interest with the new weapon grinding and the items. From a casual standpoint, this never needed to be anything more than a straightforward, fun shooter, but I can understand why Steam keeps adding to it.
