Can you start your own server with the free version? I might be able to get some casual friends of mine to play this, but they're way too sheltered to take on the Internet at this.
The game just went free to play. There will be exactly five billion noobs at all servers at all times now.

Maybe not if you look actively for vanilla servers running only the original TF2. I suppose that's the only hope for serious players.

Then I will do my part by not downloading this. I'll stick to APB:Reloaded instead. No need to thank me.

Then I will spy rape them all. It'll be fun.

Do such servers exist now? I lost interest when they started adding the huge numbers of new weapons and I started getting killed by weapons I could not possibly identify before dying to, so a vanilla server would be great.

I might whip TF2 out again if there are some decent vanilla servers.

Vanilla, as in no non-standard weapons allowed at all?
That's called "your connection to Steam has been lost". Euch, horrible. The game is far less strategic and interesting if you omit things like the Kritzkrieg, mini-sentries, dead ringer, etc.
Tbh, a lot of the non-standard equipment is... bad, anyway. But a few bits are good-but-different and add a lot of variety to the game.

I'd never go back to vanilla TF2, the way it is now is much improved. That said, even with all the additions, you can still play using only the default weapons and kick ass no problem.
