I went and had a look at the mission. My saves aren't on Expert so that may explain why
the trap door at the top of the ladder near the Portcullis control room wasn't locked
The only other way, besides the room you said you can't go through, that I've found to the upper area is very tricky but I did it so you probably can.
There's a dark mine section with a big spider in it. I think you can sneak past the spider if you're quiet, though I didn't try. When you go past it, you end up at a spot where you can jump down or climb up some ledges. There are a couple of nuggets on the ledges. Opposite the ledge with the nuggets, there's a ledge with a hole that you can go through and climb up a tunnel to the waterway I mentioned before. It's tricky getting across to that ledge. I had to stand on a very, very narrow bit on the wall between the ledge with the nuggets and the one with the hole and managed to get just high enough to mantle up. It's worth a try, anyway.
I found another way to the outside area, and I finally finished the mission!
From the end room, I went back along the sewer the way I had come, then up the ladder I had come down. This put me in the area with a number of pickable gates, where a Hammerite comes down every so often and patrols.
I went back up the stairway I had come down to a point just near the office the Hammerite waits in until patrol time. There was another stairway there, which I had come down... I went back up it, too, and found a metal door. Through this door and I was into the area with the waterway and the metal catwalk above.
From there, I had another annoyance: the guard who patrols from the kitchen around the courtyard frequently got stuck on the library side of the doorway, he having forgotten, evidently, how to work the complicated machinery of a door handle. This meant he kept walking against it like a moron... I knew I would have to open it for him; but when I did from the left side of the door, he turned immediately towards me, saw me, and notwithstanding the favor I had just done him, attacked and slew me.
So I tried crossing in front of the (closed) door to open it from the other side... but it appears that when he's against the door, he can look right through it! He saw me, yanked the door open (oh, yeah, now he remembers), and minced my meat.
Finally, I had to moss the area right in front of the door, stand, and run pell mell past it. I still got a "huh?" but I was past too quickly to register on his pea-brain. I opened the door from the right, and he left without glancing my direction. I entered the library and competed my various tasks.
But boy, I sure cut it close on the loot; I needed 1000, I got just under 1100 -- but the stats claim there was over 1900 loot in the level. Where on earth could it be?
Now I'm on All Astir, and I'll look for a thread there to ask a question -- or else read the answer if someone else already asked it!
Thanks, N.

From the beginning, when you get to the hallway patrolled by the third Hammerite you encounter, you get to the stairs going up...and then
you go to the top of the stairs...look up, and see the crossed wooden beams above, and make your way onto them...a ring awaits you there. Second time around for me, but it's been a long time. With the objective of "Escape Unoticed", does this mean I'm not supposed to club anyone. If I can, is there a blackjack available that I missed, because it sure would come in handy about now.

Also, I seem to be stuck. Once you jump down into the flooded basement area (past the large spider), there is no way back up. I've stacked water drenched crates in the failed attempt to retrace my steps. Going all the way forward gets me as far as the library. The Priest's room is inaccessable without alerting him; as well, frobbing the second floor book seems to get his attention. The elevator at the far end of the library leads to the beginning, but there is a guard barring my way. This is why I need the blackjack. Or a noisearrow.

Ok...the blackjack issue is answered..we don't get any on Expert. But how can you possibly get the Priest's loot, for example, without somehow alerting him. And I'm still stuck. Unless I can find enough loot in this area to satisfy the objective, I have to somehow return to the earlier section(s), which I can't do.

Well, I managed to muddle through, but my loot total couldn't include the Priest's loot. I had to divert one of the guards with a noise big enough that caused him to check it out, but not large enough to trigger "missions failure"...and that is not an easy thing to do. My problem had to do with accessing the basement...
I forgot to open the manhole, which was locked from above. I reached the basement via "large Spider route", which is a one way passage. So once I jumped down, I couldn't get back up, and, with the manhole locked from the other side, I was stuck. I managed to unstick myself via doorways to elevator.
I hope that made sense.

After completing Escape from Guilesatpeak yesterday, I now also completed Tears of Blood. I noticed several changes between the two version: There is more loot, decorations were added in many areas, iron grates are now marking inacessible doors, and a few areas were opened up in the sewers. Some of the guard patterns might have been changed slightly as well. When playing Escape from Guilesatpeak, I had grabbed a hammer in the first room and proceeced to rampage through the prison. In Tears of Blood, I stuck to the shadows, hidding from the guards. I only knocked out two at the very end, after I finally got the blackjack. This second playthrough was more enjoyable: I already knew my way around and playing the mission properly made my experience more enjoyable. Finished on Normal in 1 hour and 4 minutes with 1297 of 1937 total loot.
