It's fun when you get swarmed with no way to retreat in a safe direction, and you wind up running away into unexplored regions. That doesn't tend to end well :)
I haven't played this for a while -- I think I got a bit burned out -- and I'm playing Shadow Warrior at the moment, but you inspired me to have another couple of runs. I'll have to make sure I come back to this properly.

How far into it have you managed to make it, Shadowcat?
Shadowcat on 13/10/2013 at 10:14
I'm not sure, actually -- I don't remember, and the game doesn't tell me in its stats screen.
Level 5 is my highest unlocked start point, so maybe I reached L7 in my best game?

Managed to make it to level 6 with some pretty good equipment and a fighting chance at beating it last night, so I decided to break out the ol' Fraps and record it. A lot of new enemy and weapon types in this level.

I've seen this game described as a top-down Doom in some places, but this is the level that made me realize that it's closer to a top-down System Shock.

Level 8 end-boss defeated, and with 1 health to spare! Level 9 here I come! :D
Well, 9 will have to wait until tomorrow. It is late as hell and I've been playing this thing for the last two and a half hours straight. I stocked up my arsenal like crazy before going to meet the level 6 endboss again, crafted armor-piercing panzerfausts out of the tin-cans that otherwise would've gone towards building a new armor. All that gearing up paid off though, I managed to beat the damn thing, and after that I was unstoppable for the next 2 levels. This game oddly enough gets easier towards the end, mostly because by then you've gotten into the groove of it. The hardest part, for a new player, I believe is level 3. Mainly because it shifts from just melee-based enemies to ones wielding firearms. You're given mere seconds to adapt, and if you can't it's back to square one.

Geez, Henke. How the hell are you able to do it? I can't ever seem to find enough parts to make anything interesting, and my ammo is almost perpetually low.

I eagerly await the impending tale of woe ;)

Haha, I didn't mean to say that it gets easy, merely that it gets
easier. The same way that Dark Souls gets easier once you've gotten to grips with it. It's still hard as hell but at least now you have a working understanding of it and can start working towards a solution.

I have been hoping someone would say something like this to give me an excuse to IMPART MY WISDOM!
Tips:
-Stick to using the knife in level 1&2 on all but the hardest foes. Running backwards and slashing in the air as they run towards you works pretty well. You can also trick swarms of enemies to run into the anomaly, but this is kinda tricky.
-It's more economical to use the agl-1 instead of bombs to open secret walls.
-Get as many empty cans as possible. Eat canned food instead of using healthkits to restore health. With enough empty cans you'll be able to craft a couple of plates, which you then can craft into armor. This will come in handy in level 3.
-As I mentioned earlier, the armed guards in level 3 are (imo) the biggest bump in difficulty because they require you to change the way you're playing the game. Stop and listen for footsteps after you've killed a big hoard of enemies, the guards often come trailing behind slowly, and often come from another direction than the main host. You always have longer range of fire than the guards tho, so try to meet them in long corridors or open areas and use a good long range weapon if you have one.
-Also try to make a detector, and later a EM detector as soon as possible. The EM detector lets you see enemy positions through walls. It is
invaluable. I'd never have gotten through the later levels without it.

I bought this on a whim when Gamersgate had the Steam key on sale a bit ago. After watching your videos, I don't think I'll be regretting the purchase, that looks phenomenal.

It is phenomenal! It's a truly great, great game. :D
edit: Well, mostly anyway. I just tried picking up where I left off, at the start of level 9, but when I clicked Continue, instead of level 9 loading in I got... the Game Over screen. WTF! Is there a time limit on save games or something? Did it get deleted because I let an entire one and a half day go by without resuming my game? Or perhaps my 1/100 health got rounded off to 0/100 in the level transition? What's worse is that apprently you can unlock level 7 as a starting point if you reach level 9, but I didn't BECAUSE I GUESS I SOMEHOW DIED INBETWEEN LEVELS 8 AND 9! THIS IS BULLSHIT! THIS GAME SUCKS ASS
