To cut down on chatter in the multiplayer meetup thread - let's sort out the details here.
I played a multiplayer game with Al_B the other day and he had to host as I am fairly rubbish with network protocols. Was very fun though and we soon had a 3 room house built and a decent amount of lead mined.
First off, we need a dedicated server. Is anyone able / willing to host that? Or maybe there is some online service which allows this to be set up without someone having to leave a computer switched on?
Second, someone should be nominated as being in charge of the world to dictate what direction it goes in. If possible, I'd like to give Al_B first refusal on that since he was good enough to ease me into the technicalities of that. First thing we should build is a kind of Town Square I guess - with a few signposts with the name of the town and maybe some rules to work by. Then we should build a shelter. After that, lots of material gathering, crafting and building of a proper town / fortress / base. I guess people are also free to build their own abodes anywhere else.
This all sound good?

While I do have a laptop that could work as a server, I'm less certain about my ability to actually host. I'd need to test that first.

Yes, was great fun even with very little up-front organising. I really want to be involved as much as possible but my biggest problem is not having dedicated blocks of time due to real life commitments and other events. I'm going to struggle a bit to run a server from here due to work over the next week or two but will have more chance after that if it's still an issue.
As I can't really commit particular times it's probably best if someone else organises the direction for the world - preferably someone who knows a little more about the later game and traps to avoid in multiplayer arrangements (looking at you, WK :)). Might be good to get a few informal games going first to get a handle on things before attempting to settle on a single permanent world to make sure everyone's at least dipped their toes in the water particularly with some of the changes with the new patch.

Me and my kids have clocked up over 300 hours in terraria, I would definitely be interested in joining in, but wouldnt be able to host a server though.

I may ask on facebook if any of my friends have a machine they use as a dedicated server for anything else and if they wouldn't mind hosting a Terraria world on it. If I can get that bit sorted - does someone want to rule it? I agree on playing some informal ones too - Al, I'm still interested in picking ours back up from time to time if we see each other online. I'm with you on (

real life commitments. :)

Ok, I have a friend with a server who may be willing. Can someone who is good with network stuff volunteer to email him about it? Also, would be worth knowing roughly how much bandwidth per person will be used.

And where is the server located?
faetal on 31/10/2013 at 10:13
I'm not sure about the particulars. That's a conversation someone can have with my friend if anyone's happy to do so. I have zero knowledge of these things.

I only ask because if it's located on the other side of the world it may be difficult for me to play. Due to lag and all that. :(

Ah, I didn't realise these things still happened in today's world of fibre optical jiggawatts and iphones and smart glasses.
