Alright, so this game is really screaming for my attention. I just finished DX> HR and am bound and determined to start this now.
The learning curve seems steep as hell, though. Any tips? How is MP?

Learning curve is actually not too bad. MP is great; it's wonderful to explore with friends and build up your empire together. However, I found that the actual construction was less satisfying than Minecraft. I ended up playing it a lot for about three weeks until I had totally awesome gear and had explored all over... and kinda stopped.
Don't let that discourage you, those were some fun three weeks :D

Is it sorta the same as Minecraft where you gather a bunch of wood, build a house before dark, and spend all night crafting?

Not so much. As soon as you make a better weapon than the bronze short sword, you should be able to fight the random enemies on the surface fairly easily.

I've only played a little of it but intend to spend more time on it at some point. Just do a search for terraria wiki in a search engine and you'll pull up a few starting guides which help, although as Zerker says it's not as obtuse as minecraft. Having available crafting recipies given to you automatically helps a lot.
I found that the initial stages still required you to build a shelter quickly to have cover at night and sealing up the background so it isn't empty space or dirt is also important. Exploring so you can mine decent ore seems essential and (as with minecraft) creating torches or other light sources is very important. Although the game is procedural there appears to be more variety than minecraft and exploration is more rewarding.

definitely worth while, very kid friendly too, me and my 2 older kids have now clocked up 40+hours on this, mostly in MP. Still havent done the dungeon yet though.

It's amazing. I've killed a few nights with it. Why aren't more platformers this absorbing? I hope this is the first of many to come. An absolute joy to play. :o

It is more about spelunking, exploration and fighting rather than minecraft's current emphasis on building and survival. If you do want to be super-hardcore you can do a permadeath runthrough, though you may need some experience udner your belt for that. I plan to do one (once I have explored the limits of my current world). Oh, one other recommendation - play with the largest world size
edit: Does anyone know of any other 'platformers' as good as this? I can only think of Spelunky

Craft yourself at least gold armour and sword as soon as you can.
Check the (
http://wiki.terrariaonline.com/Terraria_Wiki) wiki, it's full of useful stuff although you may want to discover it all yourself.

I dunno if I ever would have discovered taking six lenses to a demonic altar in order that I may craft a suspicious looking eye that would allow me to summon an eye of cthulhu without the wiki, but yeah, I have tried to avoid looking at it as much as possible

It's fun at first but after two bosses killed and a few powerful artifacts found / crafted (only a few days of serious playing), Terraria becomes super boring. I wouldn't want to touch it again at least for the time being.
Enjoy while you can.
