I definitely agree with you that this can be somewhat distasteful - but then again, I also find this adolescent cynicism and superiority thing just a tad distasteful, which is why I think that the Weasel was being a bit of a dick.

Be as it may, people care about Pratchett. He is a much loved author. Hence, people care about him being ill (which will probably lead to less Discworld goodies than otherwise), and because of this they try to do something about it. I don't find it all curious that the same people aren't making causes for every sick person out there, they just don't know them.
People are rallying because there is a large group of them that care, and this funds research that could potentially help any of the victims of this disease, regardless of hordes of "nerd" supporters.
Bit of a dick, indeed.
Anyway, I think asking whether the celebrity cared before they got sick is rather stupid. Do you care about all sorts of diseases you and no one close to you are not suffering from? Trying to call the character of the person in question because they didn't care before they got sick is silly.

It's also fucking ridiculous to think that you wouldn't do the same thing in his position, with his millions of dollars. People bitched about Christopher Reeves doing the same thing. And Bono with Africa. "They're just using the problem to draw attention to themselves." Oh - and raise millions to help. What the hell have you done to contribute?
I guess they want us to believe that were they in this situation they would purposefully NOT contribute money to the cause of curing the disease, for fear people would call it disingenuous. How very noble. Arrogant fucktards.
I've got a heart disease that could *probably* be cured if enough genetic research was done. If I had a million dollars, guess what I'd spend it on? If that makes me a self-centered prick, then so be it, but I'm not gonna pretend I would do otherwise.
And while we're on the subject, it isn't 19fucking82, and just because someone likes Terry Pratchett (or any fantasy literature for that matter), listens to Rush, or plays chess doesn't make them a nerd. What the hell IS a nerd anyway? I thought it was something jocks called intelligent people in high school. Whatever.
In short, Mr. Waesel, crawl back in your hole and shut the fuck up.

Yes actually.
Of course people will care more if they or someone close gets something. But that is being selfish, whatever way you look at it and it rubs some people the wrong way. It's understandable but lets not butter it up, eh?

Yes, it's selfish. People are selfish. Somehow I think that if Mr Waesel was being all selfless in his life, he wouldn't spare the time to be all snide about other people's selfishness.

There's nothing wrong with chess! :thumb:

With all respect Pratchett's stuff isn't "literature". It's pulp fantasy humour. At best. And you don't know what a nerd is because you are one :p
Rush and chess are awesome though, especially together.

Rush is pulp fantasy rock. Nerd.

Care enough to actually do something more than just saying so? Like what have you done for kids with Cystic fibrosis lately? I'm sure you get my point.
There is nothing wrong with this, and expecting anything different is bloody stupid. Selfishness isn't inherently wrong.
Anyone that is rubbed the wrong way by this, are hyppocrits, unless they are actively supporting research in all kinds of diseases they care so much about. Anyone who goes along the line of "What an asshole! He never cared about altzeimers before that self-serving bastard!" needs to spend some time with Captain Picard holding his face.
