In Thief 2, the 'Courier' level...
I track the girl through the market square...no problem. Sprint over
the bridge...no problem. Turn left and there she is ahead of me,
walking up the slope or turning to the *right* at the top. Now,
whatever I do, the game ends on the basis that I've been spotted -- even
if, as I head up the slope, I go invisible. Can anyone help, please?

It sounds like you're too early in the mission for this to be the problem,
but is she holding the letter when you see her up on the slop? Your task is
to follow the letter, not the girl. She may drop it at some point, at which
time you want to stick around and keep your eye on the letter and let the
girl get away.
Good luck
Loony

The objective says 'follow without being spotted," right? Most
likely, your problem isn't that you're being spotted, it's that you're
not following.
Is the woman still holding the letter? If not, hurry back to where
she dropped the envelope. Someone else will be along to get it
shortly. Follow that person.

Yep, after a lot of playing I think I've sussed it; on level Normal she
drops it before the bridge! Hardly worth the walk, really. Thanks!

What's so cool?

Who is Terry Pratchett?
RGL on 12/8/2001 at 18:44
Oh please.
Rincewind would be turning in his grave if he was dead.
However, how can you be sure that is TPratchett?
KGoodsell on 12/8/2001 at 18:48
Of course, we can't really be sure.
I have to confess, I don't really know anything about Pratchett, except that he is a well-known author, and I believe his work was inspiration for some parts of the Thief games. His name comes up a lot in various Thief forums. I believe he has a book called "Thief of Time" or something like that. I've never read any of his work, but I've been planning to.

Terry Pratchett books are excellent. I'm currently reading the Discworld series (its main series). Take every cliche of fantasy, fairy tales, and also a lot of things from real nowadays life, put it together. Mix a lot. Sometimes, powder with funny pseudo-science. Don't take it seriously. And yet the result is pure nectar, and a hundred percent fun.
However, there are different subseries in Discworld (and other books apart of Discworld which are good, too), and you might like some series more than others. I know of some people who don't like the whole Discworld series, but that were not indifferent either.
Best solution is to get someone who has read a significant part of the series tell you which book to try first, depending on what kind of stories you like best.
But they are a must read (or at least, a must try).

Well, that's his e-mail address, so there's a good chance it's him.
Yannick on 12/8/2001 at 19:17
Yes, I was about to say the same thing. It's the one he uses in alt.fan.pratchett
And, funny enough, his last novel is called "Thief of time". (Unless he's got another one out yet, he publishes so often).
Well, I would not be surprised to find a reference to TDP or T2TMA in it, it would be exactly like pratchett to do such a reference.

Wow. You know, I'm not all that surprised. Ank-Morpork and The City have more than a few similarities...a Thieves' Guild, a Watch, technology that's a bit ahead of its time...More than a few irate gods, too. I'm reading Soul Music right now. Splendid book.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld books are excellent and there are several references to his books in various Fan Missions.
