Originally posted by Yannick Hey, I nearly missed the reference to Gollum, in "Witches Abroad" the other day, although this particular reference is among the most obvious. Must have been tired... Hmm. I know this is an old post, (in an old thread) but what is the reference to Gollum? I'm pretty sure I missed it, cos I don't remember it... Anyone?

Page 95 (corgi paperbook edition). They're on a boat in a cavern. I'll give you an excerpt :
Quote:
Terry Pratchett,
Witches Abroad"Someone's following us", hissed Magrat.
Two pale glows appeared at the edge of the lamplight.Eventually they turned out to be the eyes of a small grey creature, vaguely froglike, paddling towards them on a log. (...)
"'ullo", it said, "It'sss my birthday."It's the "birthday" reference that made me recognize him, although the whole scene is Gollum-like.

(Only eleven minute's delay for my answer to this old post. You're lucky, aren't you ?) :)

Maybe he does post here, but under a nick?
Probably not, but thought I'd get everyone stirred up again.
So what are the similarities between the watchhouse and Shoalsgate? I hadn't noticed.

So, possibly Mr. Teatime *is* based on Garrett?
(He's a Thief of exceptional skill who is given the tricky task of killing
The Hogfather (Father Christmas)
.)

The Hogfather) was first published in 1996.
Also, Mr. Teatime was an Assassin, not a Thief.

I bought Soul Musik today on the way to my work. That`s the newest book of Terry Pratchett here in Moscow, Russia. Laughed so much while was in the metro that some people even felt scared and confused. On the other hand by chance made the acquaintance of a pretty girl standing beside me. She wasn`t scared by my homeric lauhgter and after a several minutes she asked me what was so funny in the book i was reading. So i pointed at the funny place. She began to read it first smiling then laughing. O, boy she had such a smile i couldn` t resist...
Aah...well...about Mr. Pratchett. He`s genius. Reading his books from Diskworld series is always the greatest pleasure. I have already read about 20 Diskworld books and have found dullish or amuseless not one of them. Great reading ideed!

I just got an idea - what if the Hogfather was based on the Trickster? Just imagine... :p
I've read some 24 Pratchett's books so far and I've been laughing all the way through... my favorite one is the Last Continent (read about 5 times)... too bad the translations are soo sloooow (well, in fact they aren't but waiting for a new one seems like eternity :( ).
I visit alt.games.T-D-P regularly (being more of a lurker, though) and I'd say he is Terry, the style is appropriate...
At first, in fact, I thought it's just another taffer that's kidding...
Oh, and most of you probably already know this little short story but since I've just visited the site again, I thought I might add a link to it:
(
http://members.fortunecity.com/bookdepository/stories/pratchett/trollbridge/trollbridgetext.html) Troll Bridge (short story)
I'd definitely recommend, if you haven't read any Discworld novels so far and if you find yourself laughing, you should go and buy a Discworld book!
