a Hammer said that "Taffer" is a corruption of "Trickster"
When?

I can't tell you when, but here's the file and transcription:
HM1C0352: "Nay, simpleton. Knowest thou not to say 'Taffer' is to speak the name of the defeated adversary, The Trickster? 'Tis a corruption--a cloaking that acknowledges him without intent--and gives him an entry into thy thoughts."

Sarnoth could be just about anything. There's a Lord Dunsany story with a sword named Sacnoth that has a somewhat sentient Eye set into the hilt.

If you search the web for "Sarnoth" you get a quite a few links to sites about "Sarnath," the place where Buddha gave his first sermon. A safe bet that that's the source?
(You also get a lot of posts by people that have "Sarnoth" as a user-name.)
