I just installed TFIX for thief gold purely for the 1.19 patch and did a quick run through the lord bafford mission when i noticed that there is dialogue present that wasnt in the original game. For example Garrett will state that the front entrance is too dangerous, and have a brief conversation with the drunk guard near the well.
I was wondering if there was a way to disable this extra dialogue. I don't mean to disparage the work it took to re-implement this into the game, and im sure alot of people prefer it this way, but the thief i grew up playing didnt have this extra dialogue and i'd prefer to play without it.
Failing that, is anyone aware of a way to install 1.19 to thief gold without the use of TFIX? again, i dont mean to disparage the work these guys have done, but im not interested in any graphics mods except for running the game at my monitors native 1080p resolution.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hey there .o/
Well of course you can install the 1.19 patch without using TFix, just get the original archive from one of the links here : (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140085)
then have a look at the release_notes.txt inside, then at the readme.txt in "\new_dark.zip\doc\T1.7z" within the original archive for the procedure.

thanks for the reply constance. try as i may i was not able to apply the 1.19 patch with the instructions in the zip. HOWEVER i did discover a way to remove the dialogue, which i will share here in case anyone else shares my desire.
Make a regular install of thief gold, and copy all the mission files in a seperate folder. im no expert, but what i copied was the OSM and the MIS files eg MISS01.OSM and MISS01.MIS for mission 1.
then, apply TFIX as you normally would. Now delete all the OSM and MIS files from the thief gold directory. (I also noticed a few files with the extension DML that didnt appear to be there before hand that pertained to missions, such as "MISS2.MIS.DML" and deleting these didnt seem to have any adverse effect so i would recommend that too unless someone suggests a reason otherwise)
now take the mission files you backed up to a separate folder, and place these in the thief gold directory. voila, you are done.
The way this works is that i worked out TFIX has several "fixed" versions of missions. The added dialogue has been added by editing the mission files. I cant tell you which missions were fixed, so i suggest simply replacing all of them.
so if you are a purist like me and want to play the game how it used to be, thats what you do. if however you dont mind the added dialogue, then by all means install TFIX and off you go, its totally up to you. i hope someone out there finds this useful.

no offense, but this is just plainly stupid. if you want fixes, go for TFix. if you don't, use the "raw" patch. applying TFix and then trying to remove the fixes manually may result in unpredictable behavior, and is extremely discouraged.

well if i could find a working guide anywhere that explained in clear english how to apply 1.19 to thief gold i would happily do that. i quite clearly stated that all i was interested in was the compatibility fixes and resolution. and im sorry if me wanting to play the missions as looking glass designed them offends you so much. ill be sure to not have an opinion in the future if that pleases you.

I thought the extra dialogue was due to tiny quirks in the mission editing process at LG during the making of both T1 and TG, which never got resolved?
Either way, I find the additional dialogue quite nice. Makes Garrett feel "more alive" in those parts, if you get what I mean.
Without digging through the mission data personally I cannot say for sure, but during the looking glass podcast on gambit laura baldwin states that alot of Garretts dialogue was cut in development as making him too chatty made him seem less intelligent and to give greater weight to the moments when he does speak.
As i said if anyone prefers the extra dialogue thats fine for them, but personally i decided i would rather be without it and took steps to remove it.

I have been working as a support guy (one form of another) for almost 10 years now. it's virtually impossible to offend me, so no problem.
but, when I see some solution that I consider just wrong, I will voice my full opinion, and not care much what others think.
anyway, this is what you need to do, in clear and plain english;
-extract the newdark and contrib archive into your thief folder.
-create a folder named "patch" in your thief folder.
-open the doc folder, and the T1 archive, inside there is a file named intrface.crf, extract it to the "patch" folder.
-edit your cam.cfg, and add "dark1" (without "") right under "game dark" (any place will do, actually, but lets make it neat).
-rename thief2.exe to thief.exe (this one is purely cosmetic, but why not).
there is one thing you should know though - this procedure will not create a bug free install of T1. while you should be able to complete the game, you will encounter issues (as you are basically running T1 levels in the T2 engine) - issues that all the people behind TFix work so hard to fix. one good example would be the creature portal in the last level, which is almost completely broken when running under NewDark (affecting the difficulty of the entire mission). the fix is not trivial, but should be completed (soon), and included in the next TFix release.
enjoy.
