I used a rope arrow to get closer to the opening in the wall of the elevator room. Then it's not too hard to get across. :)

I can't find the silver. I'm all done but for that and getting another 550 in loot. I'm in the room with the pipe organ playing. From the cryptic remarks here I think the silver is connected to this room. All I see is:
2 chairs, a picture (which I frobbed), the statue, the chandelier, and a door for which I have no key.
Is one of these objects the location? I've manipulated the environment every way I know how and no results. Help! I wanna go home

to see the secret correspondence (silver):
stand up in front of Bach's painting and close to it > lean forward (press the key) > look at the bottom of the niche.

Andrea, thanks :) (and to nitewalker, too, for some clue earlier)

For all you taffers who have already been there, done that, just how the devil do you get out of the place?
It seems to me I saw a garden entrance/exit or some such thing somewhere, but I've been round and round so many times, I can't remember where it was, or if I even really saw it. (You know, after a while, all these fancy nobs' places start to run together!
:ebil: )
Thanks for the help!

Yes, the garden is the place to end the mission. It's at the top of the elevator room. :)

I have not completed much of this mission. I am in the basement but have just passed the entrance to the Thieves' Guild. I am in a rather nebulous locale and it's rather difficult to describe where I am. I have encountered two doors--one in each separate room--but even though I have now found a gold key, it doesn't seem to open either door. I have gone down the ladder into a room with a generator of some type but there's nothing down there. I can't continue if I can't get through one of these two doors. I have now spent over 30 minutes looking for keys and another way in. At this point I welcome spoilers.

Hello Star.
It took me a while there, too. Forgive me, even though I've just played it, I don't recall all the details from the very beginning. If I recall correctly, though,
make sure you have pickpocketed from one of the thief-guards in this area. Also make sure to check any tables you find in the different rooms. I can't remember if any of these rooms have small niches in the walls, but it is a good rule of thumb for this level to check all ledges, niches and cubbyholes.
Maybe not technically a spoiler, but I hope this helps. If not, one of our fellow thieves who actually has the ability to remember details will have to help out.:erg:

If I'm correct about where you are, there is a room with 2 big levers just inside the building that has two guards in a courtyard outside. There is a way into those other rooms. I believe one of the guards in the courtyard has the key. There is also a way to open all the gates at once, but I haven't tried it myself. This is what Andrea told me:
About the 4 gates: Lever and buttons have the next combination: the first toward you and the second opposite, after that push buttons.
The easier way is this:
Pull the levers until the gate in that same room opens. Go get 2 or 3 crates from the storeroom you came through, then take them into the room beyond the gate. There is a hole in the wall. Pile the boxes up, climb through the hole and jump into the water. You're in. You can climb up the other side, or go and explore the water tunnels.
The way I got in was to block one of the gates with a crate. The gate shut, but when I went back and frobbed it, it opened. Maybe I just got lucky.
