Ah yes, here I go again, these 'random' theory question. . .I do so enjoy these. lol
Anyway, I was poking around the Return to the Cathedral again and while this question has occurred to me before, this time it stuck.
If the Catastrophe of the Sealed section of the city happened 50 plus years ago. . .and all these undeads are trotting around. . .how is it that the bodies of Martello and Renault are still 'fresh'?
I can understand zombies. . . to a degree. There's a type of magic going on there that would probably make their decay either stop or slow down quite a bit, and possibly keep them together. Haunts, I can see, as there is a demon or spirit or some such in the body and they aren't exactly flesh anyway. Sorta? Kinda. . .The ghosts. . .well, technically aren't there anyway.
But two deader than dead bodies, still fresh enough for Garrett to pick up (not to mention all the tossing around of them that he does. . .) suggests they're not falling to pieces, nor brittle as a mummy would be. . .so that indicates they are still fresh-ish. . . ew! So after all this time, how is this possible?
I can overlook other 'oddities' of a place abandond for such a long time. IE, the power actually coming on in the machinery - apparently no corrosion took place, despite it being seated in a very damp, flooded place; books that do not crumble at the touch, yet were not particularly protected from the environment; doors who's hinges barely squeak, and have not corroded, etc. :) I can overlook most of these, and some of it, in this particular place may be able to be explained by the wards that sealed the cathedral.
But not the
fresh bodies.
Any ideas on this? Speculations, naturally. I don't believe anything in game could confirm this particular issue.

I think the idea is that the place is still very much "alive".
In the cathedral's earlier days, it was no more than a stone building. As it seems, changes began to take place as soon as The Eye came into the possession of the Hammerites. The Eye could have gradually tapped into the cathedral's being and eventually hold control over what happens. Obviously its control is limited, but quite noticeable, like doors shutting and locking themselves up.
As for
the bodies, they and their (former) owners' souls are possibly held by the Trickster's magic and not released until Garrett puts to rest.
Not 'alive' as in the cradle's...erm. . .aliveness, I hope. But you're right. I'd forgotten about the
doors reclosing themselves.
Creeped me out the first few minutes, and I think i tuned it out after awhile when I realized there was no hidden threat from them. lol
Hmm. The fact that t
heir spirits are still there accounting for the freshness
. . . it could be. I suppose with magic involved its all possible (to various degrees). The whole idea's still creepy, though. :)

i dont understand why even such a question.
its surely obvious that the builder dost keepeth
their most righteous dead bodies
fresh.
