Outta curiosity, as best I understand it, TDP cannot be "upgraded" to TG, right? So, then, is it really worth spending the money to buy a copy of TG;? as I've always been curious about the missions and in-game updates that accompanied TG.

depends how much of a die-hard Thief fan you are.
The new missions are arguably a mixed bag, although I don't think you'll find many people criticising Song of the Caverns.
Also, for the most part, Thief Gold is the version considered as canon, so you may be lost in discussions about mages for example.
But you won't miss anything unmissable with Thief: DP, so to speak.

hummmm . . . maybe then if I find a copy for cheap, then; preferably an authentic copy for less than $15.
It's a bugger LG never released a TDP 'overhaul' patch to bring it on par with TG, for those of us who bought TDP soon after it was released, and before TG hit the shelves. At the time, I couldn't reason spending another $45 for what seemed to only be a few extra missions.

Don't know what kind of stores you had around you, but when I bought Thief Gold (right when it came out) it was $29.99 with a $10.00 rebate for owners of Thief : The Dark Project.

At the time, IIRC, was Electronics Boutique (before they changed to just EB), and a couple other PC software stores that closed down a little over 5 years ago. Sad, too, they were good for hard to find stuff . . .

I criticise Song of the Caverns. The opening section is terrible; an unimaginative section of caves that's either really bland or very small. Reading about keepers dying in droves against what turns out to be fairly easily avoided obstacles or enemies and small places just makes it worse (and no, I give no credence to the idea that they're lying about the dangers to keep people away). You have to swim through a weird tunnel of water to get to Raoul, which is just there as another obstacle, making little sense in terms of cave geology (and never mind that you can somehow hear Raoul from the other side). And you'd think Raoul would pick somewhere a little easier to get into in order to, you know, build a shack from scavenged timber!
The opera house is great, but the lead up is tacked on and obvious.

Thief Gold had some really bad additions which just made the game overly long. TDP is the way that game should be played. The Mage Towers was one of the most tedious and uninspired levels in the game, to be honest it resembled a fan mission.

Well I personally think Thieves' Guild is awful. Some occasional cool bits but the sewer section is extremely tedious to get through. I had the same problem with Soulforge but for some reason I enjoyed that mission slightly more.
Mage Towers is ok, Song of the Caverns is possibly my second favorite level out of all Thief.

Thief Gold is what LGS would have made in the first place were it not for time constraints. That should say it all, though I'll throw in the fact that several of the additions to Thief Gold are among my favourite parts in the series (the new sections of The Sword, and Raoul in particular).

My favorite level is the bafford bonus map :joke:
