I'm really happy about the success of the gaming scene for the Iphone/Ipod Touch. It brought real competition to the handheld gaming market, challenging the Nintendo monopoly status quo by having rock bottom prices and having little red tape for developers to get their games distributed. (Too bad that the dumb arse who fasted in his room, in protest of Nintendo not granting him DS license, wasn't an Iphone developer.)
As a result prices I had hoped that prices of DS and PSP would go down (
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/pspgo-games-could-be-cheaper-than-iphone) and it looks like that maybe happening now.
At the end of the day, the winners of their war are us the consumers.
Of course the Iphone by design cannot compete directly with traditional dedicated handheld games machine, the audiences are as different as the Wii's vs. Xbox/PS3. Traditional core gaming developers, i.e. those whose bread and butter are JRPGs, suddenly won't all jump ship from the DS and PSP.
P.S. Keep your "over-priced shitty smartphone" trolls out of this thread, thanks. Oh and grow up.

How cute.

Wouldn't the fact that console games (DS, PSP) use cartridges/umds whereas iPhone relies on downloads always keep the console games slightly more expensive? Or are the carts dirt cheap in bulk?

The new PSP, the PSPGo does not have a UMD slot, it relies on digital distribution as it has 16GB flash memory to store games on.

What David said about the PSPgo and don't forget about the DSi and its digital distribution (if that ever picks up steam). It supports SD cards for a reason.

Thanking Apple for the iPhone is like thanking Microsoft for Windows. They're not doing it for community service.

Thank you, Cpt. Obvious. It's just a thread title.

So now we have a competition on a market no one cares about anyway?
Cool

I've actually been seriously considering an iPhone, but the 3GSs seem to be out of stock now. There's only two carriers, and each of them (at least according to their websites) offers plans for $60 that only includes 500mb of data. Which sucks. So I might just wait for a deal.
