Wait, wait - dema's in Burma again? Since when? I thought you were in Tokyo desu.
Also, Burma? What's up with that? I thought we're supposed to call it Myanmar now. Has that been cancelled?
I am. I'm working on a project here.
Calling Burma by Myanmar would be like, let me try to figure out the analogy here, like the US government in the 60s renaming America to "Coexistencia" and giving blacks (who are all black panthers after all) and pretty much anyone else not in the military a dirty leer, and telling everybody, you're not in control anymore. We're not in "America" anymore, and you aren't "Americans" anymore. "America" is a dead dream now. We're in Coexistencia now, and you're going to fall in lIne & coexist peacefully as a Coexistian or else.
I think something roughly like that is the reason the opposition still prefers to use the old name. The new name is kind of symbolic of the lengths the military govt would go to letting everyone know it's in total control, even renaming the entire country, along with states, cities, even streets, so everyone knows the old world without them is gone.
Of course they'd argue Burma is too connected to the colonial history, so had to go. But their paranoia goes too far if they get into torture or the like to fight it.
But technically yes, the formal name is still Myanmar and I'd use it speaking to someone official. It's not so bad, just a name. I just use the opposition name here because I can show my colors more.
Edit: I realize how appropriate this discussion is ITT, so no apologies for answering the question...

In retrospect, I apologise for my prior jew comment.

No problem. I'm jewish(by blood, not by practice) and I wasn't offended.
