Johnny Depp returns to the gonzo world of Hunter S Thompson in (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR9-Fo89D6k) The Rum Diary, the long gestating production that was apparently considered such a "waterhead fuckaround" by the author that some suggest it might have contributed to him pulling the trigger in '05.
Other than the familiar monotonic-intonation I'm not really feeling any connection to the zany and brilliant
Fear and Loathing, one of my favourite movies, although I realise there is no actual connection beyond the narrative likely being a drug/alcohol-fuelled exploration of being a journalist in a foreign environment. This one looks far more conventional, down to the slick-looking Depp canoodling with some dolly bird and having some turn as hero of the day but with an injection of slapstick masquerading as narcotic episodes to remind you that this is Hunter S Thompson after all.
Would loved to have seen the part of the scuzzy character getting drugged up with Depp being played by Del Toro but that would have been too sweet, I imagine.
On a tangent I watched some of
Rango again last night and love the brief cameo of the Fear and Loathing characters in that opening sequence, it's a pretty underrated movie that one.

I almost posted a thread for this myself. Was held back by the fact that I didn't have anything to say about it except that it looks good. So, yeah, it looks good. :)

I haven't seen the film, but I tried reading that and couldn't get into it. It just seemed like drug-induced hallucinations and retardation. Do I just not get it because I've never been into drugs, or is there something I'm missing?

You're missing something.

Johnny Depp in a movie where he plays a rum swilling buffoon.. this sounds familiar somehow...oh right..the Pirate movies.

Eh?

The fact that he never once minced onscreen in a Jack Sparrow style during the trailer pleased me greatly.

lol, true enough. Was just making a joke.. watched the trailer and looks like it might be a decent movie.

As a huge Hunter S fan this makes me pretty sad. Although the Rum Diary was a lot earlier than Fear and Loathing, and therefor a little less insane, this still bears no resemblance to the man at all. It's like they've tried to turn him into Dr House or something. Rather than being someone who's just crazy and pretty well incompatible with the world at large, they're going for the "talented but quirky outsider who get's up to hilarious shenanigans along the way!" angle. The whole girl/boat double entendre made me want to slam my head into the wall.
This whole movie seems way way to coherent.
