Sooooo
We've got Godzilla on the way - (

And Jupiter Ascending - (

And Edge of Tomorrow - (

There will be more.
Jupiter Ascending looks rather meh to me, and it's not helped by the directors. But other than that my take on this glut of sci-fi is this; mostly poor. We've had loads of stuff in the past 2 years and most of it has been pretty disappointing. The surprise for me was Oblivion. I know it shouldn't work, and it's a mashup of loads of stuff, but it really worked for me. Prometheus, Elysium, Cloud Atlas, Ender's Game. All films that I should like based on the premise but all so... meh, especially Elysium which (looking back on it) was rubbish. At least the others had atmosphere.
I'm both elated and saddened by all this sci-fi. I love sci-fi but I don't like the way it's being done. I watched Solaris, Clooney version, again and it's a better film than so much of the stuff that has come out recently and it's not even that good.
And f*ck all the superhero stuff. I'm done with that.

Tom Cruise Runs To The Future Pt.15 looks like horseshit, why is Channing Tatum an elf, and Godzilla looks ok I guess?

I quite liked the look of that one (the Tom Cruise one).

I very much enjoyed both Oblivion and Cloud Atlas. The former very much made me think that I'm getting bored of Morgan Freeman playing Every Benevolent Person Ever though.

He's not "playing" them. Just ask any penguin.
The art of the modern trailer. Making every movie, no matter how crappy, look like the event of the decade.
I have to agree that too many recent sci-fi films are really just old sword and sorcery tales in hightec drag. Of these three I think Godzilla is the one I will watch on the big screen. At least it isn't pretending to be something it isn't. Edge of Tomorrow sounds like another rehash of P.K.Dick's "what is real and how can I be sure" theme. He does have other stories, you know.
Cloud Atlas was refreshing, despite Tom Hanks being overexposed as the reluctant hero. (And faetal thinks Freeman is wearing thin.)
And Prometheus! Don't get me started again on that shiny heap of alien droppings.

For being yet another Starship Troopers derivative, Edge of Tomorrow doesn't look too bad. I'll take Robert Heinlein power armor and military identity angst mixed with P.K. Dick's 'what is real and how can I be sure' theme any day, provided the whole sum of it isn't garbage.

I don't think it's a ST derivate fella.

Kinda looked like it to me.

You're right.
Everything with a resemblance to anything else is a derivative of it.
Aaaand in other news - Transcendence, a new Jonny Depp sci fi. No trailer afaik, this is about creating AI and looks to non-action. Which is nice but we still haven't had Upstream Color here so I'm hoping that the big names in this mean it'll get a UK release.

I loved AV Club's introduction to the Edge Of Tomorrow trailer. :cheeky:

Tom Cruise must fight for the fate of humanity, hoping to free them and himself from alien enslavement by slowly ridding himself of his flaws, learning from them, and gaining the confidence necessary to ascend to a higher level. Also, he stars in a movie called Edge Of Tomorrow.
