Since a few taffers suggested I should start a thread about the 3D engine I'm currently developing, I'm doing this now with this stub. During the easter days I was too busy with the relatives, than to write something together. Yesterday evening I created a new LaTeX file in my ~/doc folder, in which I will describe my engine in detail; the result will be a PDF that also contains the screenshots and everything (also screenshots of the very beginning of the development). I wanted do this for a few months, but finally started it now. Give me one or 2 weeks to write that document down, please.
After I published the PDF, I will use this thread for QA with the TTLG community.
I don't want to post some pictures here right now, because in the pics folder there are also renderings in it, which are created with the standalone renderer Pixie, and in some cases, mainly those where there are no refractive or reflective materials, some really convoluted global illumination or HDR it's difficult to recognize which renderer produced which picture. Since I don't want to post "fake" screenshots I'll just create new ones with the current stage. This reminds me to add code, that fills the comment field of the saved PNG with a meaningfull description.

I think that just about sums it up.

Yeah, To be fair I'll give him at least the two weeks to see something...
Not too sure why he'd think it would be a good idea to start this thread so early with nothing done at all done. I'm curious to see the screens though :p

very neat, i am looking forward to reading the discription and checking out some pictures.

Would you guys shut up? I asked him myself to post a thread about it since he'd told me what it was capable of, and I was interested in how he acheived certain things, and he said he had screenshots on request.
You have absolutely no excuse for those prejudiced remarks. Be more polite please.

Especially considering what we know of hexarith experience with game engines this far (RT, you could have checked his posts). So :
Random_Taffer : lurk more.
hexarith : what komag said, at least in a positive and optimistic manner. Good luck dude. Also : will it be an open-source engine and / or will it run with other OSes than Windows ?

Seems like a project of this type is a John Carmack level of project. A solo-written advanced 3D engine is just slightly above average in skill level requirement one may think. It's surely a whole lot easier to talk about what it will do than what it does do. A lot of people can talk about. Only a few can do it. If you have that then I am more than duly impressed.
Good luck on the effort! This project sounds fantastic and it will be very cool to see it develop.
Cheers,
Martek

Actually the announcement of the new and cool next generation 3D engine is not THAT impressive. Especially when it is at that level. The major problem of ANY spare time project is the endurance. So unless we see some examples of continued work, of course it has to endure sarcastic remarks. Just think of Unforseen Consequences and how it was announced in relation to how far it got.
I still think such a project quite exciting, my question is though the motivation. If you do this to make it yourself it is a fair answer, but if you do this because you want to have a 3D engine that can do certain things, then the question is, why you are not using an already existing open source 3D engine, and put the features in that you want to have.

Exactly. There are several reasons why individuals might choose to start work on a 3D engine - the technical challenge, to develop one's skills, to gain more insight into 3D technology, etc. However, if anybody thinks they are going to set the world on fire with their dazzling new technology that has, for some unknown reason, totally escaped the likes of id and Epic then they are sorely mistaken.
Nevertheless, hexarith has made no such claims and I for one am interested in seeing what his engine can do.
