Well he said he was an optimization junkie so we'll see how it goes.
And I think there's something to be said for not going so hard core with the graphics quality, so that there's more resources left to do more interesting things that you don't see in todays games, which are geared totally towards graphics.
That's different enough.

One of hex's earlier posts blew my mind...can't wait to see the screenies though.:D

Hope he is. For what he said seems that he wants to turn POV-Ray into a realtime 3D engine. He's going to need real programming superpowers for that, at least.
(edited later)
I forgot, talking about 3D engines.. anyone knows something about how OpenDarkEngine is going? I haven't heard a thing about it in a while...

Hexarith, here is another "dream request" from the un-knowing masses.
(Please remember that I don't need this, but perhaps zillions of others might?)

So, how totally impossible is it to convert the current graphic-standards of T3 down to something much more like T2's level of compatibility? (From my own very limited game-experiences, one small step to TnL graphics completely left many decent 3d-cards, PC systems and their game-players in the dirt.)

Why would you want to? The only cards that won't run T3 are the ones without pixel shader support (GeForce 4 MX, Geforce 2 etc.) which you cannot even buy anymore.
Anyway, the only way to convert "compatibility" is to discard features - if you have T2-level compatibility, you must also have T2-level graphics.

The logic step would be to convert T2 to higher standarts, not the other way around, methinks.

This would best be a mapper's job. They would re-create all the T3 maps in DromEd as a fan made campaign, like Calenrda's Legacy.
So that's a question you should ask in the Thief Fan Mission forum.

No that's only one "logic step", not the only one.
Converting the T3 missions to T2 missions would be fun, to see how creative someone could get to represent all the things in T3 in the T2 style, and people with old old computers could essentially play the T3 plot in T2.

Converting T3 maps to T2 is something that was doable when T3 was released. Well, we're talking about a new engine here, and I don't think that crippling the engine to show T3 maps in T2 quality is a good idea. The logical step is to use all the eye-candy the engine can show, not degrading it.

It would be fun, but I still think that the other way around would be better, playing T1 and T2 in a T3 style engine with real shadows and bumpmapping.

I still think that Thief II looked better than Deadly Shadows. But Dark Messiah is going to blow every fantasy game ever made out of the water, for both graphics and almost certainly gameplay as well.

From a developer's perspective, that sounds quite
boring to me. Copying all the assetts originally to a new engine with no freedom of altering them a bit? Unfortunately, it has to be that strict, as otherwise the conversion would not be accepted. On the other hand, yes! Playing it would be awesome when it's done right. However, gathering a team which sole purpose would be to copy all the old assetts, improve them and then to insert them into a new engine would surely be
difficult. As you might guess, I am more into creating new missions... (
