Well, the good news is that a party with electoral reform in their platform is now the official opposition. Small step in the right direction.

I don't see a problem with buying the fighter jets. The country has to have some means of self-protection and self-reliance considering how big it is, and also having an equable role in UN military affairs isn't too much to ask. People in other countries are often not aware of it, but the Canadian military usually has a decent supporting (or even active) role in conflicts like the Iraq war or the more recent Libyan rebellion.
I'd like to see a tax that is focused entirely on paying down the national debt. Rather than lowering the GST, a 1% debt tax wouldn't be that bad. Harper did a pretty good job in the beginning with the debt, I wish he'd concentrate more on it now. But maybe it does bug him that all his initial years working-it-down have been ruined by the last couple years of recession and minority governments.

The jets are important because all of our F 18s are falling out of the sky. I saw it happen last year with my own eyes at the airshow in town. They are old as hell and falling apart. There is also the issue of northern soverignty. The Russians were invading our airspace awhile back testing things out. We need those jets and nobody but the conservatives seem to see that. The first ones wont even arrive for years yet anyway. So we arent paying for them next month. Besides our pilots are the best in the world. They deserve the best equipment.

I was following you until you said that Canadian pilots were "the best in the world." What is your source for this?

Hows not being invited back to Top Gun for scoring too highly? In any case my comment wasn't meant as a put down to anybody, just saying so I don't interpret your comment as trolling. Wouldn't you agree any pilot that spends his or her entire life trying to get into a figher jet deserves the best money can buy, in any country? They don't just let anybody who signs up fly those things.
Main point is that Canada needs those jets, and the New Democrats are so hell bent on using the money spent on them to destroy the Tories that they very specifically put Cancelling the Order in their main campaign promises, which, aside from all the other reasons, was enough for me to vote conservative.

Which version or versions of the F-35 are you planning to buy, just for clarity's sake?
I must admit that I have my doubts about its potential effectiveness in an interceptor or CAP role - not that western air forces seem to do much with multi-role aircraft except light off cruise missiles or LGBs from them nowadays.

I think is a modified version of the A variant, we don't have carriers.
