I thought the Bow Upgrade was just a pathetic way of bullying newbies. Unfunny and a complete waste of everyone's time. Unbelievable that 8 years later people are still using it. Imagine a Half Life Forum like this:
New member: What's this about a gun upgrade in one of the lockers?
Member 1: Oh yes it's there all right, keep looking and you'll find it ;) Right everyone? (metaphorically mugs for the camera and winks)
Member 2: Haw haw haw!
Member 3: Tee hee.

I don't know about bullying, but apparently it just became part of folklore. Whether it is funny or not, is disputable. For instance, if ever get the opportunity to make a bow upgrade reference in a computer game, I certainly will, because this kind of humour appeals to me.
On one of newsgroups I'm subrscribed to, we used to celebrate April Fool's Day by sharing our impressions from the newest Fallout 3 beta. It had nothing to do with bullying, really, and we never made fun of those who would take our discussions at face value (and believe it or not, someone always did). Now that Fallout 3 has been announced for real, we will need to think of something else. Maybe Thief 4?
