I've always figured it was about psychology. When you first start drinking, you're sober so your decisions on how much you should drink are likely to have at least some amount of reasonableness to it. Later on, when you're drunk and uninhibited, drinking more then you should seems like a better idea.
It takes a lot more beer to go from "Buzzed" to "Hospital" then it does whiskey. Plus, all the water in Beer makes it physically harder to drink to extremes. While the rather harsher experience of doing shots also acts as a counter, the drunker you are, the less that bothers you.
Aye, all very true. And alcohol does start to taste increasingly better as you drink too; cheap brandy grows delicious few shots in :p
Speaking of which, after having my wine every night now, I finally reached a point where I absolutely crave a glass or two in the evening with my supper, but I'm kind of sick of getting drunk each night :p Oh dear Shiraz and white zinfandel, why must you taste oh so delicious...
(but I guess that's a good sign I'm not really an alcoholic, right?)

This evening, I drank beer with my ex-supervisor, because we're both excited about the work I am doing.
Then I drank with my housemate.
Then I drunk, which I still am.
