Scot's previous summer movie thread seemed like a good way to create a little more focused megathread discussion but now that the summer season has finished, maybe it's time for another thread? It's coming up to that time of year when the Oscar-bait, indie darlings, foreign successes and generally more adult fare start filling up the screens, mostly in a bid for competing in the various year end circle jerks. Some of the films I'm looking forward too:
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiTiKOy59o4) Gravity - This is probably the big one for many here, myself included, and the first reviews seem to suggest that the hype is justified.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUQNjfhlREk) 12 Years a Slave - the trailers do look a little Oscar-baity but I think that McQueen's previous work means we can rest assured that it's not going to go for easy sentiment.
(
ww.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk_R04LfUQU) All Is Lost - Only heard of this recently but it almost feels likes a companion piece to
Gravity. This time it's one man, Robert Redford in a largely wordless performance, lost at sea.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFphYRyH7wc) Inside Llwelyn Davis - It's the Coens.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8utPuIFVnU) Dallas Buyer's Club - Looks like another great performance to add to Matthew McConaughey's rather staggering career turn around.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWhS0xN3C0g) Prisoners - I've not seen the director's previous film, the acclaimed
Incendies, but this crime thriller looks pretty good.
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST7a1aK_lG0) American Hustle - David O. Russel is definitely firing on all cylinders these days and I'm stoked that Christian Bale is back to pulling of some goofy dance moves. Takes me back to the American Psycho days. :P
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iszwuX1AK6A) The Wolf of Wall Street - I was aware of this film being made but didn't really know what kind of film it was going to be. The trailer suggests something far more comedic that you would expect from Scorsese and DiCaprio looks to be channeling some of that
Catch Me If You Can charm. And, look, it's Matthew McConaughey again.
There's a bunch of other things too, of course, like
The Counselor,
Joe,
Night Moves, but I haven't been able to catch trailers for those yet. So tell me what I've missed and what you're looking forward to.

Because I'm Facebook "friends" with Terry Gilliam--only celebrity I've every done that with ... well, and Ken Tanaka (aka David Ury / "Spooge" on Breaking Bad), but he probably shouldn't count--I was following the development of The Zero Theorem, which IIRC is basically out of post-production now, and even if objectively speaking I wouldn't say that it has to be a masterpiece, I still feel like I have some emotional investment in it so want to see that & want to like it.
Definitely looking forward to Inside Llewyn Davis. Coen Bros haven't disappointed me yet... to an almost improbable level of confidence. It's hard to think of any other film-makers with that kind of consistency IMO.
Um... The Hobbit & Anchorman 2?

This is 40 and We're the Miller's were 2 awesome movies from this year.
The Conjuring was (for me) a surprisingly good movie also.

Is Blue Jasmine getting any awards buzz? Cate Blanchett was sensational in it.
Gravity & Wolf are my must sees so far of the upcoming season.
edit: icemann - don't see either of those catching Awards buzz...

Wolf? Not heard of this.
Will see Gravity when it gets here. Blue Jasmine? Does Oz get films before us?
I don't think I've seen anything that's Oscar worthy this year.

I was referring to Wolf of Wall St in the list in OP.

I was a little miffed that I missed this one's theatrical run. I like a good horror film in the more old-school vein, and the reviews seemed to indicate that this was one.

It's possible. A Woody Allen film will always get a look in and Blanchett is certainly part of the 'in' crowd.

Outside of festivals, the more 'worthy' films do tend to clump towards the end of the year.
A couple more to keep an eye one:
(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZJqxgR-5Xc) Rush - Ron Howard films are often pretty much the definition of Oscar-bait but they are often pretty damn entertaining as well. This biopic about two rival Formula 1 drivers looks to be no exception.
Enemy - So in the OP I mentioned Denis Villeneuve, the director of
Incendies, new film
Prisoners but he's also got this creepy doppelganger thriller, with Jake Gyllenhaal playing dual roles, coming out too. If it's as good as the reviews say it is then this is going to be right up my alley.

Award speculation to follow:
The Weinsteins and Oprah are going to be pushing The Butler like mad. The Oscar campaign for that is going to be bigger than The King's Speech and Shakespeare in Love combined.
Fruitvale Station is probably going to get a few nominations.
The Way Way Back and The Spectacular Now both occupy the same niche as The Descendants did, so expect screenplay nods for both of them, possibly a Best Picture nom for one.
Post-humous Best Actor nom for James Gandolfini for Enough Said.

Alright, just saw Gravity and, wow, that's got to be one of the most visually spectacular films I've seen. The last time I was this dumb-founded at special effects was way back when Jurassic Park fried my 13 year old brain. Major props to Sandra Bullock too because the story and characterisation are more than a little thin and if it weren't for her performance and 'everyman/woman' presence, the film would not have been the white-knuckle thrill ride it was. Definitely see it in 3D if you can as it works brilliantly with Cuarón's super long takes.

Gravity was great, and it made excellent use of 3D (especially first-person shots of space stations, it really shows how cramped they are), although (massive spoilers)
I don't get why Clooney's character got 'pulled' out into space, since both characters were at the end of a rope- surely they should have just snapped back? Or why he didn't try using his empty pack or pressurized O2 as reaction mass to propel himself back. For an experienced astronaut he sure seemed to give up in a hurry.
