^^^Yup. Right on the money, there.
Face it, GTA sells consoles. PS2 sales spiked like shit every time a new GTA game shipped. Microsoft felt that sting last gen, and reversed the stakes this time. Yeah, Xbox eventually got superior ports of the games, but their interest by then was waning. They wanted to have the upper hand this time around, and seeing that the game wasn't exclusive this gen...this was a smart move.

Rockstar/2K sure needed that funding too.
I mean, 700+ million dollars in sales wouldn't have been enough for Rockstar to even afford developing a patch, let alone making whopping two expansions. :erm:
True, but 2K's financials have been shit for a while now. It's a mystery to me, too.

How did the first episode do? I heard it performed below expectations, unfortunately.
But I'll be getting "Episodes from Liberty City" (or w/e it's called). Hopefully they'll gain more revenue from the disc-based product.

Shit I need to finish the main GTA4 game before leaping into this.
i read Lost And Damned was overall decidedly "meh".

I ended up trading GTA IV - I liked a good deal of the gameplay but the writing was so awful that I just couldn't bear to watch another cutscene.
It's nice that they're providing substantial DLC for those who like it, though!

The story was more than a little dissapointing. While the initial parts were quite promising, it very quickly descended into "I is keeling random people for money"

For me, the series ended with San Andreas. IV was just such a let down compared to the previous titles. They set increasingly high water marks, and the absolute apex was San Andreas. They are on the downslide, as far as I am concerned, and I was so disappointed with IV that it is hard to believe that R* can ever top San Andreas. The new generation is so thirsty for development time, $, and resources that these huge worlds with meaningful content are going to be rare.

GTA IV was somewhat polarizing, but A LOT of people loved that game. I was disappointed with the lack of mission variety, among a few other issues, but I still enjoyed the game and felt Chi-Town Wars was brilliant, so I'm still a huge Rockstar fan.

I'm actually quite confused by comments towards the writing. I thought it was superb, all of the cutscenes were amazingly well done, it was very cool that they tried to convey emotion without needing bombastic scores or music, and honestly I thought of them as the payoff. Looked forward to each one.

This is what disappointed me about the story. It was really unfortunate because the actual story is really phenomenal, but it gets muddled up in the random jobs side-plots. The ending was also kind of lame and didn't add the closure that I had hoped for (
luckily the bit where you finally find the man you've been looking for earlier on was much better and added the closure that I wanted, albeit at the wrong moment). I also found it a bit lazy of them to have a revenge plot right after a revenge plot.

You know, I think it was Zero Punctuation who said that he saw it as a problem that they had so many gameplay mechanics since much of the game acted as an extended tutorial. But I actually thought that was what made the first half so great. It was that feeling that anything could happen next. Now you're driving a boat, BUT WAIT now you're hijacking a moving truck?!?! The last third or so of the game becomes a bit dull because they stick with what they have. If the game continued to throw crazy shit at me until the end I would have loved it.
