Huh. I realise that it's reached a point where I don't even know what year the games I bought came out.
I don't think I actually purchased a game on physical media this year. Everything was just an entry on a web site. So much was from sales. Who knows when a given game was made? Obviously I could find out with little difficulty if it occurred to me to do so; it's just that it's no longer obvious. Kinda weird.
Same here, and since I never buy games on release anymore (with rare exceptions) and just wait for that eventual "90% off" deal I feel like Im always behind.

I can relate to ShadowCat. It's not so much about buying things online, it's just that I don't bother to keep up with the new release hype anymore, as I know I won't have time to play them anyway. So nowadays I usually buy games a year or three behind release, when they're on sale, and the only reason I remember the game even exists is because people have kept talking about it.
My favorite games in recent memory have been Dishonored, Trine 2, Mark of the Ninja, and Kentucky Route Zero (still in progress). None of which were released anywhere near 2014, I think.

The few games I actually want to play I totally buy on release or close to release. This year these were Metal Gear Rising, Dark Souls 2 (+DLCs) and Dragon Age: Inquisition. All three are amazingly good. The Fall also deserves a mention. I usually don't buy games I don't intend to play right away, so no game hoarding during sales for me.
And I also played Thief. I thought I'd file that under 'disappointment of the year', but I expected it to be shit, so it wasn't a disappointment. 'Worst game of the year' came to mind too, but while it was the worst among the games I played, it's a decent stealth game on it's own. So I don't know, 'best stealth game of 2014 that totally shat on its franchise'? :joke:
Older games I discovered this year were Mirror's Edge, Magrunner and Battlezone.

Yeah ditto. With the advent of things like IsThereAnyDeal and the rate of sale prices leading to most people (other than those with any sense I guess) accumulating games faster than they can be played, it's easy enough to just keep dealing with the backlog and wait for newer games to go on sale.

TIE Fighter (1994), I think is the most fun I've had all year with a video game, so it's my game of the year.
I also got back into AI War after not playing it for a year (2009). Bought Xenonauts (2014), but it just didn't grab me. Almost forgot Alan Wake (2010), I should go back and finish that one, because it's the most AAA game I've played in a long time, and it was pretty engrossing. I played Spelunky steadily for the first six months of the year, I'm almost afraid of picking that one back up.
It's been a pretty good year for video games

I have pretty much no clue what I was playing in, say, January. I suppose maybe I could trawl through the "NOW what are you playing" thread, but I don't always post to that.

Bloodborne
While all of us got stoked to see Bloodborne revealed at E3, the trailer that Sony and From Software released during the Tokyo Game Show solidified the game as one of our most anticipated of 2015. Amazing atmosphere, stellar monster design, and hints at how multiplayer is going to work all combined to make it one of the most exciting things of the show.
Crawl
Crawl proves that you don’t need a AAA budget to deliver a mesmerizing trailer. This first look at the stylish multiplayer brawler pays loving homage to the days when we had to blow on a cartridge in order to get a game to play. The awesome music and fantastic narrator wrap the entire thing in an unforgettable bow.
Rise of the Tomb Raider
There are so many great and surprising things about the Rise of the Tomb Raider trailer, which revealed the game’s existence at E3 2014. Hearing a doctor talk to Lara about PTSD stemming from the horrific events of 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot clued us in to the very real, very dark tones of the sequel. Perhaps even more surprising was the news that the game will be an Xbox One-exclusive, at least for the time being.

I agree that with huge backlogs, release years aren't as important these days as they used to be. It's interesting to theorize that all of Steam's sales might actually be hurting retail sales and purchases of new games on release day (let's hope they don't notice). Anyway, games I enjoyed that came out this year:
Styx - Definitely has its faults, but it was still one of the best stealth games I've played in a while. My personal GOTY.
Alien Isolation - Thought they pretty much knocked this one out of the park, despite some frustrating parts. It genuinely scared me.
Ether One - Really dug the art style, the adventure gameish gameplay, and the unique story.
Far Cry 4 - Good chaotic fun, nice big open world to explore. Animals that want to tear your face off.
The Forest/The Long Dark - Had some good fun with these Early Access survival games, anxious to see features get added and the games turned into finished products.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - Gorgeous game, a bit too short, but entertaining for about 5 hours. Showed potential to be better though, hopefully it's a stepping stone to something bigger.
Thief - Despite the criticism, I had some fun with it - it probably had more to do with seeing how it held up to the originals, but I still put some decent time into it.
Far Sky - No, not that other "Far" game. Another short game, sort of an underwater minecraft (but not really). Needed more content, but I still had a good time with it.
Wolfenstein - It's just a straight up shooter, but seems like a good one. Still working on it.
RealMyst Masterpiece Edition - Yeah, pretty much for nostalgia's sake only.
And there really wasn't one big overwhelming epic game from this year (for me at least, hello Dark Souls II).

The topic is "best of 2014" not "most anticipated unreleased game of 2015".
