I've never been good with controllers for some reason and have no interest in buying one. If what Malleus is saying is true, it'll probably be easier for me to use keyboard and mouse (with fixes) than to try using a controller. For me, it's either KB&M or I skip it.

I used to hate controllers until got one (XBOX 360 wired) for DkS. It was a turning point.

I bought my first controller this year
(after 20+ years with MB&M) to play "Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons".
Now I own two for lego co-ops and assorted game ports to pc ...
(The cheaper "Rockcandy" models licensed for XBOX 360 wired)EDIT: It certainly made stringing together strike combos in "Sleeping Dogs" much easier!
EDIT 2: Oh, yeah ... the thread topic! My favourite
(played) pick for 2014 is
Far Cry 3 -- Runners up:
Metro Last Light and
The Forest.
EDIT 3: Damn all you rich bastards that purchase games within a year of release!

I haven't gotten to play many games this year. Of the few I have, I'd recommend Dark Souls II because it's Dark Souls, and that's always a good thing, and Tesla Effect because it's nostalgia done well.
It's weird that at the very end of the year, I end up grabbing two games during this most recent sale that I've ended up loving far more than I thought I would. They're Dungeon of the Endless, and Grimrock II.
Dungeon of the Endless I picked up because I liked the look of it. I was expecting a bog standard roguelike. Something I'd play a few times, have a few good laughs with, then put back on the shelf, maybe installing it a few times over the years for the hell of it. What it ended up being was this roguelike tower defense realtime boardgame...thing that's just awesome in every way. It's like a lot of things in a lot of small ways, but nothing else is quite like it as a whole. It's just damn good fun, and I recommend it.
I had an idea of what I was getting into with Grimrock II. I thought the original was great, and figured I'd enjoy this one about as much. But...no. It's so, so, SO much better. It's MASSIVE. Tons of exploration! Lots to tinker with! SECRETS EVERYWHERE! The mood, the atmosphere, the music. It's got it all, and it's suckered me in in a big, bad way. It's so great.
I'd say more, but I want to get back to playing these games. Later all!

Even though there's a tonne of stuff I've missed this year, ^agreeing with Renz here. Dungeon of the Endless was a snazzy surprise, and Grimrock II had a fantastic overworld separating the dungeons.
With 27 hours on the clock, I'd add The Talos Principle as my late-coming favourite of the year. Out of all the games which can be described as "a bit like Portal" this is the bestest.

I played DS2 with KB+M as well.
It is a much better port than DS1 but still pretty terrible, some moves/inputsequences are impossible to do on PC because of the way From implemented modifier keys like ctrl/alt.
But they are not essential to beating/enjoying the game, so .....
If you have a controller, use it, if you do not have one, don't bother buying one just for this one game.

I've sucked this year. I don't think there's anything from this year that I've played.
I've actually got Thief but I haven't even run it yet. And I got Sunless Sea, but that's technically next year.
Useless!

How is Sunless Sea? I'd never heard of it before, but the RPS Award piqued my interest. Is it worth getting in it's current state or should I wait for the finished product?
