Because we program your favourite news-site, we sit behind the counter when you hand us your credit card, we're in that cool new browser extension that you downloaded today, we're in your mobile phone and your email client. We're in your kid's homework and your wife's car navi. In fact we are your kids and your wife.
So don't fuck with us.

Despite that it kept files for insanely long periods of time (stuff I put up in 2007 was still available as of last month, even!) I think everyone's moved to Mediafire by now.

At least we still have that and Rapidshare, but this thing might kickstart a wider crackdown on file sharing sites...

Yeah, that's got me worried too.

To me, losing Megaupload and the rest wouldn't be too tragic a loss. I don't have anything particularly against these file locker sites, but we've long since had better, more convenient choices in how we store and distribute our files on the internet. And they do, admittedly, lie in a legally dark grey area, deep enough in to cast doubts on their Safe Harbor status.
What worries me is what the precedence this sets, and who MPAA and RIAA will go after next. Would they attack cloud services such as Dropbox and Azure? It wouldn't surprise me, considering they're the most likely source of distribution after the locker sites meet their eventual demise. Nevermind the fact that these are valuable commodities, who's ability to share copyrighted content is only a small contingency of the services they provide. All it takes is the tiniest bit of doubt to land them in court. And while the media conglomerates might not necessarily win their case directly, they can still drive their target out of business through legal fees and lost revenue. It's a win-win situation for them, regardless the outcome.
It almost seems that if you start up an internet based company, and you make less than a billion a year, your life and well being hangs upon the whims of Big Content. If you can't afford to do business while defending yourself in court, you're good and well screwed. Even without SOPA/PIPA, this is a toxic environment for any startup company. You can survive the withering fire only if you're already well entrenched.
It makes me wonder how much the government is willing to harm itself and its economy for the sake of a few vested interests. How far down this slippery slope are we willing to slide before all this idiocy stops?
DarkForge on 20/1/2012 at 12:54
Granted I've not really been following the whole SOPA/PIPA thing in depth but from what I understand the closure of Megaupload isn't really related to it, in terms of MU's servers being US based and SOPA being geared towards the US targeting piracy sources overseas.
Nevertheless MU being shut down came as a shock to me this morning and is the source of major suckage in my life right now. Out of all the file sharing sites I've downloaded from over the years, nothing has given me the speed or stability that MU did. I can only hope that it will eventually make a comeback.
scarykitties on 20/1/2012 at 17:20
I don't see that happening, since the FBI issued international warrants for those of the MU group who have not yet been taken into custody. They are facing serious charges and don't really have anywhere to hide, considering that at least some of the employees were arrested in New Zealand on FBI orders. Internationalism isn't protecting them this time.

This thing won't go away, it will just mutate into something else... hopefully with due process, less vague wording that's ripe for abuse and the whole IP de-listing malarkey completely excised - but I doubt it.

Seriously? Get a grip of the priorities in life. A storage site primarily used for warez distribution certainly ain't amongst them.
