You do realise that you're basically asking the same question as: "how can Euro/dollar/whatever coins be traded for cash?"
Ok then Mr. Smarty Tafferpants, where is it? Where's this cash? Why don't I turn in a candlestick and get gold coins in return?
What I am trying to tell you people, is that ALL loot gets tuned into cash. Not gold coins, just this cash. This cash is NEVER seen or found as loot ANYWHERE, so WHY, does, it, exist?
Why not just exchange for gold and copper pieces?? WHY??? CURSE YOU LOOKING GLASS!!! CURSE YOUOUOOUUOU!!!!

Actually in all 3 games you do find coins - gold coins and stacks of coins in Thief 1 and 2, and small handfuls of coins in T3.

Yes, and in TDS they get traded in for cash. The coins are not kept as cash--they are traded in as "metals", and Garrett gets cash for the metal. If coins in TDS aren't cash but treated as metals, then what is cash made of, what does it look like, and where is it? In TDS, Garrett doesn't lose his cash if he's taken to Pavelock, either.

Ah, well - being TDS, it's probably negotiable bearer bonds & stock options :erg:

Oh, FINALLY someone gets it.
Or maybe neb is right, and all of Garrett's world is just a dilusion. If the end of Thiaf is going to be some kid with a snowglobe, I swear I will shoot meself.

Here's a couple of other mysteries.
How come Garrett can't climb the outer walls of the Cradle, even though they're made of stone and he has climbing gloves?
In the Lost City, what are all those mysterious lights with no visible source? The waterfall area when you first go in is fully and brightly lit, but there is no visible light source. The same with most of the tunnels and caverns. From a good distance you could assume that there are glowing mushrooms there giving off light, but there's actually nothing there except those lights

I always called those 'phantom lights'.

this cash problem is only in TDS
In the first two, the coins are the currency! They don't get fenced, Garrett keeps them! Everything else is exchanged for more coins. I dont see what is so hard to grasp about this concept

Does he have cash before he can get his backpack...back?
Pity I cannot check this myself right now. I always thought you could buy your gear directly when stealing only coins (in the streets, not missions); unlike with other valuables which have to be fenced first.
