Where's the
noire, damn it?
Some of the greatest noir films are in sunny locales (see
Chinatown and
LA Confidential) so I'm not too worried about the shift to daylight. I'd also be pretty surprised if there aren't some sections back in gloomy ol' NY. The thing I'm most worried about is the cover shooting. I think we all know that it's going to have cover mechanics in it but it needs to be tweaked in a way that supports, rather than supplants, the slow-mo divin' and shootin'. I've heard that
Red Dead Redemption mixes cover based shooting and bullet time (sans dodging I assume) without things degenerating into gun based whack-a-mole, so that's promising at least.
On a side note, I am interested in seeing how a Rockstar narrative will play out in the more focused, action game format. By not being one of their open-world opuses it will, hopefully, sidestep the two things that cripple all their narratives (the great length which leads to silliness and strained characterisation as things escalate, and player actions at odds with the tone of the narrative) and deliver the tight slice of pulpy crime drama their games have always teased us with.

It's not the shift in location, though. I know that noir can still be wrung from sunny locales and what have you; the problem is, this trailer doesn't display much, if any, of that old Max Payne atmosphere past the narration. Its lead-in to Max shaving his hair off looks like out-takes from Commando if it starred Bruce Willis.
It's a poorly put together trailer, all in all. Chances are the game proper will be remarkably different and this is just bad marketing, but we'll see.

hmm, looks like a covershooter....sad, but could still be ok. the trailer is not gripping me at all, the chello does evoke nostalghia but does not fit the contens of the trailer imo. will have to wait for gameplay.

I have to say, I find this trailer 'feels' a lot more like Max Payne than any of the screenshots they've shown. A lot of that is the music, admittedly, but I have somewhat more trust in their awareness of what makes Max Payne than I've had to date. Which wasn't very difficult, mind you...

Right. I dunno about you, but saturated bursts of colour in MY Max Payne? What the fuck were/are they thinking? Where's the noire, damn it? Serious flashes of popcorn action flick in there at the end, from bullet time cutaways with zero panache to the hyper-spastic Michael Bay editing.
Creativity has been stifled by suits in marketing, my brother.

Gritty. Looks like a Kane & Lynch game but with Max Payne starring in it. I'm ok with that.

I could see Max Payne + cover working if cover were more like a safe spot to do your bullet-time dives from and less about waiting for the other guy to pop his head out.
Did this version of Max remind anyone else of Double Agent-style Sam Fisher?

I like what I'm reading. The trailer also seemed to back up their claims of using the past tense narrative design like the first two games.
Also, about the cover system. Looks like it's not really necessary, it's just sort of tacked on. At least that is what I got from the article.
(That is, we'll still have the bullet dodge and shooting goodness.)
I'm a bit disappointed that they are removing the "many pockets" idea for the weapons. Oh well, if the few guns they do have and the combination thereof work well then no big deal right?

They are called 'Shoot Dodge' and 'Bullet Time'.
sNeaksieGarrett on 6/10/2011 at 23:15
The second thing I was talking about was shooting in general (not slow mo aka Bullet Time, which I knew already), but yeah, Shoot Dodge.
