Are the Children intelligent? They seem to be able to be doing a lot of things, like playing music or operating machinery, although those things could be programmed. And they constantly talk, saying things that sound like recordings. Also, I've never seen any of them having an intelligent conversation with another one, or with a human.
So, I suppose they are mindless robots that are programmed to do certain things.
Also, was the robot city Karras wanted to create supposed to have Mechanists in it as well?

Correct. They were mindless, and the vocals were obviously recordings by Karras himself. That was kind of the sick thing about those robots. Karras recording himself giving *himself* praise.
Man those robots sure do remind me of the Ed.... from....

There are two little robots in the bank mission who have a seemingly pointless conversation that literaly goes on forever. The problem is that it's not obvious that it's a conversation because they stay things they would say anway.
Were they? We were never told how they can distinguish between friend and foe.

The same way Mechanical faces do, I suppose. And it isn't perfect. In Life of the Party, security devices are turned off, in order not to mistake a guest for an intruder.

The friend/foe thing is explained in "Framed" in the room where you turn off the cameras there's a conversation between a mechanist and a city watch.

I thought he tells the guard he has to take part in their seminaries to learn that. Anything else?

So what was the explanation then? :p

Lumpy just told you about the seminaries, R Soul.
And to Lumpy, I think Karass' plan was to rid all organics for the good of man (exept KarASS doesn't realise is that oils and fuels machines use has orgaincs. oops.). He wanted everyone to live there in his Mechanist/Masterbuilder utopia. He just wanted the psycotic glory of the Master Builder, but mostly himself.
As evidenced by one of the loudspeakers in Soulforge: "Praise Karass! And... eh, the master builder..."
It's like the villan in movies whose heart is in the right place, but his brain is some where dark, damp, and covered on cobwebs, because his plan is obviously flawed.
But hey, I could be dead wrong.

Actually, he wanted to get rid of all living organisms (I don't think rust gas affects dead wood and the like, since the Lost City was supposedly treated with Rust Gas and still contains wood), including humans. The only ones that would survive would be the ones in Soulforge. And the ones outside the City, of course.

I can't remember what they said. I'll have to go back and listen again.
