Hey,
I have just started playing The Cistern. I've gone down the drainpipe and now I'm trying to get further down, but I can't hold my breath while swithing all four of levers underwater (Maybe there are more?). Have I missed something important here? Is there another way in?

Your title for the thread is a bit misleading as The Cistern and Calendra's Cistern are different missions. You're obviously playing The Cistern, so I edited the title. It'll make it easier for anyone who's searching for information on this mission.
There's an air pocket you can get to down there that allows you to breathe in between levers.
Jump into the hole, swim to the gate, flip the lever on the wall to open it and swim through. Follow the corridor to the first hallway on the right. Swim to the end of that hallway, but don't turn to the right there. Instead swim straight up and you'll be able to breathe.
It is possible to make it through without drowning or come up for air... I did it, once, before I found the air pocket. I had 1 health left (and was obviously playing at Normal difficulty).

Replaying this beauty.
I just love Tombraider conversions. The combination of textures, music, and underwater areas work very well in the Thief setting.
This mix, together with the damp effect, deserted tunnels, and the encounters with the bugbeasts, creates a terrific atmosphere, and makes The Cistern one of my favorite small missions. Just like TR's levels, it's all about the search for an artifact. The absence of a story isn't missed.
Mission complete in 32 minutes with 3820 loot found. Failed to find any secrets, though.
Shame Gumdrop is retired. He made some wonderful little missions.

I saw this in the "name that FM game" thread a few months back and tried it out. I liked this mission too, although I had a bit of a time getting through the first underwater part for a few. I was glad I didn't give up when I saw the rest of the mission.

Wow, cannot believe I keep finding missions I've never played on ThiefMissions. My replay through Thief FM history is really turning out nicely.
This mission was fantastically designed in terms of the puzzle-like gameplay, atmosphere, texture work, and level design. The use of BugBeasts was a nice change from the usual burrick/craymen/spider trio these sewer levels normally have. Not too tough to deal with the beasts either thanks to the ol' blackjack. Definitely, a gem to play.
Also, it reminded me of Yandro's What Lies Below and the Cistern portion of Sturmdrang Peak that came out years later.
