The colossal Xbox 360 dashboard update... - by EvaUnit02

It's now available. If you haven't done so already, you should download it. It's worth getting for the hard drive installation and 16:10 resolution support alone.
My 120GB HDD has finally become useful.

Been waiting for this for quite a while - it looks great! Just need to wait until I get home.

To be honest, I prefer the look of the original dashboard.
I'm guessing that if you update you won't be able to revert to the old style?
Either way, doesn't concern me cause I don't have Xbox Live. :(

You do realise that patches are free?
1. Just hook your 360 to a router or ethernet switch on network with access to a persistent net connection.
2. Sign up for a free Silver account (from your 360).
3. Sign-in and download the update.

Yup. I had Xbox Live Gold but didn't bother extending it because the university accomodation's internet access port (I live in the halls) only allows the use of one piece of equipment to be used. Since I use the pc more for general browsing and gaming, It made sense for me to use the PC for the internet connection. If I hook up my 360 the internet access just gets disabled. Sucks, I agree.

This.
Also, the avatarts are less annoying than I thought they'd be, notwithstanding the inevitable cry of 'aww' by my other half and the subsequent commandeering of the 360 for the next three hours whilst she perfects hers :p

I can't make mine look like me. Nintendo did it better by allowing you to change the height and angles of facial features.
But the new menus are much nicer. I'm still getting used to the focus tile always being on the left of the screen (feels like I'm playing gears of war), but the games list is so much faster now, and everything is much more organized. Plus, I can finally delete all those arcade games from my achievement list that I tried but never bought.

Good thing these avatars aren't mortal. After accidentally causing my avatar to bump it's head on the screen during the customization process I did it several more times on purpose as the thunk sound and spinning eyes were pretty amusing.
The netflicks instant que being linked up with live is a very welcome addition.

I liked the old main menu better, but this guide button menu is a great improvement.
I'm also finally getting to finish Lost Odyssey because of the install feature. The final disc used to fail reading about half an hour into it. Sure is getting cramped on a 20gb drive though.
I'm thinking about getting a new 360 since this one doesn't have an HDMI port (and the harddrive is pretty small), but I doubt HDMI is that much of an improvement over component. Can anyone who's seen both comment?

I'm a little confused about that, since I thought 1080p was HDMI only. On my dad's new TV I was able to hook up the xbox using component cables and still run it in 1080p (my tv is on 1080i). Perhaps HDMI is just for convenience? I think he has an hdmi cable, next time I'll hook it up and see if there's a difference.
