If only there was a PC release. :(
There is. The game's coming out on PC, PS3, and 360, confirmed a couple weeks ago. No idea why the devs kept it under wraps for so long.

Oblivion has a rather nice stealth system, but don't expect it to be anywhere near thief in terms of storyline immerson though :/

There are only a hand full of games I really have liked (Thief, Morrowind series), and nothing was better than the Thief series.
I have spent considerable time wondering why the rest of the world didn't understand how incredible the series was, and was always so disappointed the sales were not adequate to keep LG going, or the subsequent work of ION Storm Austin.
The commercial failure of Thief baffles me and leaves me afraid there will be no evening adventures that take my mind off the stresses that are my real life. Thank goodness for FMs and T2X!
I look at other games and they seem unimaginative (even Oblivion was a step down from Morrowind, gameplay-wise), or even boring. There is no element of convincing fantasy -- and I admit to having a weakness for the historical context of both games. I also like to play on PC -- not console -- and prefer first person. I figure that others that like these same games have similar preferences.
Why do you folks think the public did not embrace Thief in numbers that would keep it alive?

Well, Thief IS a rather intelligent game... Of course, not meaning to flatter myself or any other Thief fans, but you'll probably agree it's THAT much easier to play games like Grand Theft Auto, or the standard RPG, where, not taking the storyline into account, the only point of the game is kill monsters, gain a level so you can kill stronger monsters and advance in the storyline, and kill monsters again. I'm playing Neverwinter Nights at the moment, and so far it pretty much fits into that description... But even though I'm aware of its weaknesses, I still can't tear myself away from it.
In any case, not everyone has the guts to try something as challenging as Thief on expert, if you know what I mean. That is, the guts to do a finesse job, rather than shoot, hide behind crate, shoot, reload.
Thief is also virtually the only game in its genre.... Complete and utter stealth. (Okay, so we'll see how Assassin's Creed turns out...) Which doesn't seem as exciting as a shooter or a major campaign with killer spells and killer creatures. When I saw a preview of Thief3 in a CD that came with some magazine, I never dwelled on it. I thought 'Guy douses torch with water arrow, yeah, cool, whatever...' When I was given the game two years later, I only faintly recalled having seen the preview. So much for commerce.
For some reason many people tend to prefer the 'standard fantasy' games, or 'high fantasy', perhaps, to original games.
Okay, granted the first of the Thief series are 'ancient', and nowadays many people are spoiled by the detailed polygon 3-D graphic you see in all new games and sequels... But you'd think Thief:DS could at least be a bit more popular. (Even though some say it's not as good as the original games, you'll agree Thief3 is totally enjoyable on its own.)
Well, those are some speculations, but the truth is I have no idea why Thief isn't more popular...

That question has baffled me as well, i was sad mostly when LGS went down that there were going to be no new Ultima Underworlds. :( that was before i played Thief 2. then i was like "holy crap, theyre not going to make any of THESE anymore EITHER, SHIT!"
of course, the sadest moment in my gamer life, was when, ::sniffle:: Origin went down. :( i nearly cried when i found that out, cuz i love Ultima, and i love Thief. after i hear that, i didnt touch another RPG series for quite some time, then i played FF 8. Still play Ultima and Thief to this day, though admittadly not as much as i used to. Im still a diehard fan, always will be.
But true talented diehard fans have thier day, and i shall. :sly: Im doing research on colleges that offer degrees in game programming, and am learning C++ as we speak (and im lovin it! :cheeky: )
but yeah, i think it mainly has to do with the fact that people then were more into either RPG's, Mario, FF, or something similar. They saw Thief and were like "wtf? i cant just go up to that guard and gut him like a kipper? that sucks." some people are so ignorant... :nono: thankfully, ::in a really creepy, kiddy voice:: all my friends are Thief fans. :ebil:

Has anyone noticed that when a Thief game is made, the developer goes out of business?
Huh.... we need to get EA to get the liscence to thief. :p

Okay who's smurfing accounts? Nobody's gonna fall for that obvious trap :joke:
To expect a return to form Thief would need to be turned into a low-mid budget series for a limited audience, since it's a slow earner; or be intergraded into another game with a large-scale simulation (like Gothic).
