I'm playing the training mission at the moment. I looked on the FAQ and couldn't find anything for this problem. I am using the latest Service pack for XP, I have the latest graphics card drivers. And the correct Doom 3 patch.
I played through most of the mission without any problem. And suddenly I've got to this point where the game just crashes and closes with the typical Windows error message. And, it seems specific to that area of the mission (the stealth training bit), since the rest of it runs perfectly fine. I have turned all the graphics settings down and audio settings. Restarted the computer many times. Made sure the mod is completely up to date with that mod updator thing.

jtr7 has provided the most sound direction.
I can only add, as a quick solution, the two most common crash causes are:
1) ATI\AMD "Catalyst AI" is "enabled"
2) Nvidia "Threaded Optimizations" are "enabled"
Determine which graphic vendor you have and disable one of the above.

Wow this actually worked. Though I still think it's a defective graphics card on my end, that threading solution at least allows certain games to be playable without crashing for at least 30 minutes or so.
Now I can finally play through some TDS fan missions and hopefully all of the dark mod ones.
