Are you kidding? Torrents suck. Hard. I always get shit download speeds, and you have to depend on seeds/leechers. Not to mention, they're risky. Yeah I know, it's not always going to be the case, but torrents really aren't all that efficient, at least in my opinion.
(The other day I tried downloading a huge file with bitTorrent, and I'd get anywhere from 0 kb/s to 10 kb/s:mad: I checked the amount of seeds, and there were quite a few... There wasn't many leechers though. I admit my knowledge of torrenting is pretty lacking, but it just seems inefficient to me. I tried turning off my firewall, cause I thought that was causing a slowdown, but even with it off it didn't help - I even went into the modem's software firewall for our internet, and added bitTorrent for port forwarding. No luck.)

I've never had a positive or faster torrent experience. A straight download never takes days and weeks.:erg:
What kind of setup does it take to really see the value in it? A stronger connection still improves straight download speeds, too. Is it an issue of being able to pause the download or lose a connection and be able to resume where it left off? It's not a torrent-specific capability.
Of course, if it works best for someone, then that really is the best solution.

I'm not kidding.
My experience with Torrents was always great, and it's always better now. It's a good method to make a shared distribution, especially with high peak bandwidth (with realease time).

So why you say that it sucks?

Have you well configured you router and firewall?
With *all* P2P systems you have to do that, not only with Torrents.

There are a lot of situations where torrents are not a good download source. Like me. I'm behind a stupid NAT that I have no control over, so no port-forwarding for me. Also, some ISPs (HRMHRHRMHRMM COMCAST COUGH COUGH HACK) throttle torrent traffic.

I agree; but in fact normally, beyond illegal P2P domain, Torrents are used as alternative download source, to balance huge peak bandwidth.
IE: Linux distributions (tons of GB) are distributed from FTP server around the world, but now also via Torrents, especially when there is a new release, it helps a lot to optimize bandwidth.

I know that and you know that but most ISPs don't... they just hear P2P and all of a sudden OMG THROTTLE IT DON'T LET THEM HAVE IT!
So, until people stop being stupid, good old http it is.
(heck, I could host the dark mod on a gopher server for giggles if needs be :ebil: )

Just forward a good range of ports...either on your router or firewall, that are specified in your torrent app, and speeds will increase dramatically. Choose torrents with a high number of seeders and leachers. That's just the way it works, and I always get great speeds pretty much all the time. If you expect to get high speeds from 10 seeders, it won't happen...but if you're choosing downloads with 100 or more, it should be much faster.
Some ISP's block some of the known range of torrent ports, so be sure to choose a different range.

It looks sweet. I really can't wait now. :(
jtr7 on 9/10/2009 at 02:40
So as long as the files I want happen to only be available through a torrent site, and as long as everytime I try to download through a torrent site there's few seeders, etc., I'll be screwed.
sNeaksieGarrett on 9/10/2009 at 03:54
Yeah. I'm saying it sucks, based on personal experience of using bit Torrent. But if other people are getting fast speeds, then it must be something wrong on my side.. In any case, it still doesn't change my opinion that torrents suck. I like direct downloading better. That's just me.
