I had a lot of fun w/that old Lucasarts FPS 'Outlaws', as well. Gun was cool, too.

For some reason that doesn't surprise me much. ;)

Tenchu
From my understandings of it from what I've read, the games haven't been great since the PS1 days. The PS2 and later entries have been pretty unspectacular/cookie-cutter/mediocre at best, hardly bringing anything new to the table.

Speaking of Death to Spies, I wonder when the sequel's coming.

Yep. The original guys weren't great at the whole story part of games, aside from the second one which was the best imo. The third one on the ps2 just rehashed the 1st game and added a boring stealth killing thing to filll a kill bar of sorts in order to get new abilities. Abilities that should have been introduced as new features without all that arcade shit.
Every version has the same shitty production values (second was ok-ish) bugs etc. At least they bothered to translate the fucking mission instructions from the second onwards.
Still, as far as ninja sims go its still the best.

This thread kinda quickly veered off topic. I was just lamenting that there doesn't seem to be any games out there that focus primarily on stealth, like Thief and Splinter Cell do, where stealth is essential, and by stealth I mean stealth, not hiding in plain sight like Hitman or Assassin's Creed.

First person Tenchu would be all kinds of awesome.

"Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" and "Penumbra: Black Plague" are 1st person games with some emphasis on stealth.
As for 1st person ninjas... The best out there that I can think about is trying to play Oblivion with some ninja mods, and stealth mods, and lot of other mods...

One punchline of this thread, though, is that there are only a limited number of themes where true stealth is really essential: basically thieves, spies, and ninja ... of one sort or another. Not even assassins, where you have to do something very public. And the first two have representative games already out there.
Are there any other themes that would really require true stealth?
- I can't imagine the PC being a terrorist could work as a viable game (unless it had a Matrix sort of spin).
- He might be a hacker, like the old game Hacker (sort of in the spy category)... good potential for an update on the concept, but maybe only an indie developer would take it on.
- There's a lot of untapped potential with the spying route, too, more in the line of LGS's
Deep Cover.
- There's also the modern high-tech thief route, like the movie Entrapment. (The modern cat-burgler route just seems lame ... the PC's just a thug.)
- Undercover police would be in the "hidden in plain sight" category.
- We've already been talking about the ninja route.
I'm trying to think about what other concepts are out there that could work. That's just my basic reaction to the idea of a dearth of stealth games, laying out the terrain of concepts of what games should or might fill the gap.
