An 800 MB download just so that I can watch 10 mins of unskippable videos (featuring the publisher's logo, the developer's logo, "Do not pirate, lol!" disclaimers, etc.), but the actual gameplay then only lasts for 5 min? Fuck that. Way to advertise a product. Quantum of Solace
Fixed.
My friend completed the demo today in just over 2 minutes. It took longer than that to load and play the movies. Contrast DOOM shareware. When I bought games, it was ALWAYS after I had been impressed with the demo - Thief, Shock 2, Messiah, Anachronox, GTA2 and many more.

failed computer platforms like the Amiga
This sounded so insane I had to do some googling and wikipediaing. When I grew up the Amiga 500 was pretty much the pinnacle of gaming machinery and it's stiffest competition was from the Commodore 64. But I guess you're talking about the Amiga 600 and 1200, the ill-fated follow ups to A500. What's important to point out is that A600 & 1200 weren't upgrades you added to the A500 or anything like that, but separate machines. And implying that the 500 was a failure because of them is like saying that the Sega Genesis was a failure because of the Dreamcast.

Demos on Xbox live are getting stupid, too. Now they restrict them from you for a few weeks unless you're a gold member. As if withholding a demo is a good way to sell a game to the less-hardcore Silver crowd.

Yeah, but you console nerds don't need demos; you're going to buy the next best game with glossy graphics and dumbed-down gameplay no matter what, am I rite?

Me too come to think of it. The thief 2 demo was awe inspiring when i played that (even though it look like 10 minutes to load :P). For some reason the thief 1 demo wouldn't work on that computer though (ah the days oh 133mhz haha).

A few weeks? Try seven days. Get your facts straight.

Is it just a week? Well, that's better I guess, but it doesn't really change my argument. I check to see if I can download a demo (with the hope of it maybe being good enough to BUY), and it won't let me. So I check again in a few days and I still can't even download it.
There goes your sale, guys, because by this point I don't care anymore.
