The deed is done ... - by ponyboy

Having started thief gold several times over the years, and each time having run out of leisure time to finish, I have finally done the deed (on expert, of course). Somehow, I thought it would be more meaningful. The Maw of Chaos was probably my least favorite mission.
I liked Return to the Cathedral a lot, as well as Escape, more or less. Then, of course there always the early favorites: Down in the Bonehoard, Escape from Cragscleft, Assassins, The Sword, etc., etc. Hell, I even still like Bafford's Manor.
My fear of zombies is now at a low ebb, so I guess the game has some real world functional value after all, but the bugbeasts and apemen were tedious ... no shivers up the spine, just, "OK, here we go again," and slip into the kill-the-annoying-babbling-thing mode.
Given my post-partum ennui, should I rush headlong into Thief II, or take a break?

I recently did the same thing. I started Thief 1 years ago when it was released and got within 2 missions of finishing it and never did. So recently after playing Deadly Shadows I decided to go back and complete the first two games. It was a blast and I'm glad I did it. Maybe it's being older or the fact that I tend to stick to one game these days and not get distracted but I really paid attention to the story and took my time and got a lot more out of it. I completed Thief 2 just the other day and it is a really great game as well. T2 is much different in that there are almost no undead. Instead the game focuses on the mechanical creations of the Mechanists, the group that follow up the Hammers. This adds a completely new set of challenges to the game that make it feel really fresh when compared to T1. If you enjoyed T1 you should have a good time playing T2.

I'm just now replaying T2 and oddly enough, seem to be enjoying it more than the first time I played it. Maybe it's because in the ensuing years after its release I've honed my skills and don't get all jittery anymore when more than one guard approaches. I'm also taking my time & not blasting through it (out of sheer excitement the first time). This time around I even found a couple secrets & secret areas that I missed the last time I played it (seems like about 100 yrs. ago). One thing that did strike me however, was while I've been playing I've been recalling a lot of the T2 FMs I've played and imho some of those FMs are actually better than the original.
All in all, replaying T2 has just reinforced all the reasons I keep coming back for more (as in FMs).
Don't think I'll be going back to replay T1; too many zombies for my liking.

I generally end up playing T1 through once a year or so. While I prefer the mission design in T2 (I even liked 'Casing the joint' for some reason), the quality of the writing, briefings, and voice acting in T1 always draws me back.

I replay the games every few years, and while Thief Gold is surely the masterpiece, I think that Thief 2 is underrated here on TTLG (and strangely enough, overrated in the press, where it seems to garner more praise than its predecessor).
I recommend you play Thief 2. It has a very different atmosphere from Thief 1, but I love it because of that. While Thief takes place underground, in dark organic tunnels, its sequel shows us the cold and dreary world above. The gameplay is also refined - I'd still call Thief 2 the best stealth game ever made.

I agree, Thief 2 is definately a better stealth game.
Thief one encouraged you to kill zombies, you crack out a vial of holy water kill a zombie and realise you have 25 seconds left on it
'aw hell, don't wanna waste it', so you make the most of it and kill another 5 zombies
Yandros on 21/6/2007 at 10:58
It didn't encourage it, that was your choice. You can ghost zombies just as easily as you can ghost guards.

Yes, but say you got into a spot of bother with a gaurd, one arrow to the face, its all over or several if hes alert.
If you get into trouble with a zombie. you blow it apart easy enough, but you have got loads of ammunition left with a time limit, so I think a lot of people would feel they it would be silly not to blow up a few more zombies.
Yandros on 21/6/2007 at 11:52
Well sure, if you choose to use the holy water. But if you get into trouble with a zombie, it's easier to just outrun it, or if you have to, use the sword until it falls down, then move on.

I say dive in Thief II my friend. It;s as great as the first Thief.
Then play Thief DS. Once you finish that, support us in a petition in support of a Thief IV. Everyone here is doing it.... :cheeky: :cheeky: :cheeky:
