The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had - Gears of War 3 - by EvaUnit02

Rose-tinted glasses do tend to make bad things look better, but if you'd care to qualify your opinion I'd listen.

What's to qualify? The writing isn't complete bullshit and whatever ridiculous vaguely homosexual machismo endemic to Gears of War is absent in Rogue Trooper. The gameplay doesn't feel as boring because... I don't even know, I just know I prefer RT.
It's not a groundbreaking game by any means but it's certainly got a little more soul to it. Your precious Gears of War, meantime, was made by a guy who looks like the mutant offspring of Dane Cook and Chad Kroeger's hair, which says quite a lot really.

Gears has soul; I can't think of any other game that's so unabashedly masculine that my 19-year-old sister delights in playing. It's macho to the point of being ridiculous, and therein lies its appeal.
But all that aside, it's artistically brilliant and the controls feel wonderfully smooth and intuitive. Shooting and taking cover feel more satisfying and concrete than they do in most games. I know I've said this a million times and no-one here agrees with me, but taken on its own merits (ignoring the commercials and the juvenile developer PR) it really is fantastic at what it sets out to do.

Rogue Trooper was required reading for every British boy of my era, so I am probably biased, but I really enjoyed the game a lot - and I don't usually go for games like that much.

Does anyone even care about that anymore? You saw how Duke Nukem Forever flopped.

Yes, well, it does a good job of sucking, I'll give it that much.

I liked Gears for what it was. Macho posturing aside, it was a tight shooter.

I haven't played Gears 2 (or 3 for that matter) but I own 1. I also own Rogue Trooper on both PC and Xbox. That said, I loved loved loved RT. It was really something special. Between that and Sniper Elite, Rebellion was really on a roll. Dunno what went wrong with that studio.
But Gears...I cannot get into enough to even finish it. I cannot put my finger on it, it just never clicked with me.

I believe the thread title is taken from 'Mad world' by Tears for Fears:
