Which would explain his words; the glyphs are gone.
I only just realized that Garrett gets the key symbol on his hand, while the symbol of the keepers is the keyhole.
We really need an ex LGS/Ion Storm person to explain what that means exactly. I'd interpret it as being one of two things: a) The Key has been use to close the lock on the Keepers ending their order for good. b) The Key has locked away the glyphs but could be used to unlock them in the future in need be.

Interesting- I initially interpreted it to mean that Garrett unlocked the Keeper's purpose- to stop Gamall- though now your interpretations seem to make some more sense.

Hm... Maybe not. 'Not' to LGS/Ion Storm answering our questions I mean. They've done a very smart thing: kept the ending open, so that, as I've heard someone else say, every type of fan could be satisfied. Even now, you've named two opposing theories that would appeal to two completely different types of fans: pro-Keepers and contre-Keepers.
The only kind of answer to that question I would accept would be in a Thief 4 storyline. Since that's unlikely to happen, I'd prefer an open ending.
Personally, I've the pro-Keepers type. I just think it's not right for the Keepers to disappear forever. I don't think that was how the first keepers intended it.
You can compare an organisation to a computer; once it's getting too much glitches, you restart. Same with the Keepers. If they return, they will have learned from their mistakes/learned to survive without glyphs and it would be some years before they went corrupt again. Not to mention there would be a slight possibility of no Gamall-type person among their ranks from the very beginning, stealing books and corrupting the progress.
What I think is going to happen is that eventually the glyphs would reappear, perhaps gradually and starting with the weaker and less significant ones.
"If I never see another Glyph again, it would be too soon." - Garrett
I think if we went wild about interpretations and assumed Ion Storm meant something with every single phrase, that sentence could mean the glyphs would not return in Garrett's lifetime, and if there was a game featuring the return of the glyphs, it would be with a new character.
Of course, this is only if we go wild about interpretations. :) Our beloved Garrett could just have been wrong when he said that. :)

I think T:DS took the glyphs way to far. Think back to the keepers of the original Thief games, there the glyphs seemed to be used for recording and interperating. There were small glyphs near the traps in Constantine's mansion, but other than that I can't think of anything that resembled "spells" or "glyph magic".
That's the way I prefer the keepers, but sadly T:DS made the glyph magic wankage "canon". Fortunately they also made the destruction of the glyph magic wankage equally as canon. As I see it, the glyphs are gone, and are never to return.
Does that mean the end of the Keepers? No. Quite a few of them still remain, and though they no longer have the glyphs they still have the dedication to their cause and training as sneaks. They'll return to the shadows, and return to their proper place in the world. They'll continue to gather information and record everything they find, and they'll still tip the balance as needed to keep the City together. They'll just have to be more creative about it. I think that's what the first keepers were like, and the glyphs came along afterwards and corrupted the whole thing.
The keyhole symbol represents a lock. Whats behind every lock? Secrets. Garrett's key symbol represents simply that he unlocked those secrets and revealed them to the world.

Sorry to ressurrect but...
If the Hammers got the chalice back...
and the Pagans got the paw back...
how come the Kurshok don't get the crown back?
Garriath on 7/12/2006 at 12:34
I think they probably do. However, the Kurshok don't play nearly as large a story in the series as do the Hammers and Pagans, therefore they aren't shown in the final clip.

Jarvis, the Glyph's were always important to the Keepers, it's just Deadly Shadows focussed on them for it's storyline. The Glyph's were apparantly destroyed at the end, which would mean the end of the keepers for it is how they operate - taken the ending of the game "What will become of the city without us?". Only Artemus, Orland and a few when Gamall transformed were killed - the rest of the keepers are apparantly alive (the one in the Keeper library wasn't dead, and there were keepers when Gamall turned back into herseld)
Also, I think the key (being the symbol of the keepers) simply means that he is a keeper. Considering he calls himself a keeper at the end of the game.

I disagree with you, at the last point. The key is not the symbol of the Keepers. It is the keyhole.
Garrett is the key.

The final glyph knew to emblazon the mark of the one true keeper on Garrett's hand because he had place all the glyphs and then finally the eye. Since he fulfilled this destiny and could not be seduced by the power of the sentients and ignored the Eye's tempting words, he was marked as the One True Keeper. The little apprentice girl at the end, echoing Garrett's words and actions in the intro of T1 indicates that Garrett will begin the Keepers anew by finding all those in the city with abilities like his own, rather than relying on glyphs.

God, it's discussions like these that make me love the thief universe :D
I'm with the side that claims that garrett is the key to unlocking the powers again, if need be. (that would make the most sense if you were to continue the story further)
Also, has anyone thought about garrett being in sense a sort of "unlocking" entity throughout all the games? I mean, he unlocks the wards at the cathedral, he unlocks the eye with his own, and in the end he unlocks the glyph to end all glyphs.. ,it doesn't seem right that he'd turn right around and become a locking entity really. (and yes, I have too much free time on my hands)
Then again, did garrett unlock anything in the metal age?
