Yeah. They were just as goofy. What's your point?
To mock you for talking as if this is some kind of novel challenge that hasn't already existed for over 20 years.

Except he never did that.

To take this back to a conversation about Freespace 2: for those of you who play it with a gamepad, what sort of setup works well for you? I've done the first couple of sorties with KB+M, but I can already see that even with the mouse sensitivity turned all the way up it's less than ideal. I may eventually dig up my old joystick, but there's already fairly little space on my desk as it is.

I ended up switching to a new Joystick, but when I used a gamepad I used:
Left Stick: Pitch and Yaw
Right Stick: Relative Throttle and Roll
L1/R1 (Or LT/RT on 360): Primary and Secondary Weapons
The other two most important functions are afterburner and countermeasures, but I can't remember where I mapped those. Take those, and combine that with your most important additional functions, like swapping weapons, targeting, equalize shields, re-enforce specific shields, match speed, etc and map to any of:
d-pad
face buttons
start/select
L2/R2 (or LB/RB on 360)
Click Left Stick/Click Right Stick
Note that you'll still need the keyboard nearby for communications and anything you don't fit on the gamepad.

Thanks for the suggestions. In the meantime I've also unearthed my Wingman Force 3D and have tried it (after removing the thick layer of dust). It still works, except for Force Feedback - not sure whether that's a hardware or software issue.

This thread reminded me that I've wanted to play Freespace 2 for a long time, so I took the occasion to play through the first few levels last night. Actually a good follow up to Crimson Skies, since it has that WWII dogfighting vibe in space, and was from about the same time. The opening cinematic was great, the game looks great, plays great... one of those games that's pretty much living up to the hype. And I haven't even gotten to the mods & enhancements yet.

You really should install FSOpen- if you think the game looks great on its own, just wait until you have the graphics pack, which puts the graphics level somewhere around what you'd expect for a game released today.

I know about it and already downloaded it. I was just going to play vanilla for my first play through, or at least a chunk of it, so I get a feel for what it was like when released and I can appreciate the enhancements when I install it.

Freespace (or rather the Source Code Project) is intent on making me realise that my brain is going and my IQ is plummeting into the single digits... I was rather underwhelmed by the visuals of the game and thought that the whole "This looks like a current gen game with all the tweaks!" thing was just fanboys being fanboys.
It took me a while to realise that unless I select the MediaVPs in the Freespace launcher, I don't get any of the updates. All I get is vanilla Freespace.
If someone sees my brain, could you please send it back to me?
ZylonBane on 28/3/2011 at 14:24
So... what did you think after enabling the MediaVPs?
