I did so very briefly this morning before going to work, and at a first glance I'd say it looks very nice if perhaps somewhat garishly colourful in parts. That's literally a 30-second impression, mind you; I'm planning to start from scratch when I get home today, so I'll post more detailed impressions.
Edit: Okay, I've now played with the MediaVPs activated. Definitely an impressive and worthwhile difference to vanilla FS2. I have to say that I'm not 100% sold on the ship designs (I was always rather partial to the Kilrathi ships in Wing Commander, but that may be nostalgia talking), but that's a problem with the original game, not the mod.

I love Freespace 2. Probably the best space combat sim ive played to date.
I so wish Volition would make Freespace 3. But i doubt it will happen. Those kinda games dont sell anymore. :(

Thanks for the suggestions. In the meantime I've also unearthed my Wingman Force 3D and have tried it (after removing the thick layer of dust). It still works, except for Force Feedback - not sure whether that's a hardware or software issue.
In the Launcher, did you check the "Enable Force Feedback" box under the Audio/Joystick tab? I know that gets it working on my Logitech Force 3D Pro.
I admit I'm a bit biased since I worked on the TBP team, but I want to point out (
http://www.moddb.com/games/the-babylon-project) The Babylon Project total conversion for FS2. If you like Babylon 5 and space sims you may want to give it a shot. Also note it doesn't require FreeSpace 2; it is entirely standalone.

Is the four-mission mini-campaign listed there the only campaign for it? I sure would like to grab a Starfury and go blast some aliens, but is the entire mod just four missions? Seems like an awful lot of work for very little content.

It's checked. No idea why it isn't working.

TBP was created to be sort of the like the Dark Mod; a platform that other people could use to make missions on. So yeah, there are other campaigns you can download for TBP, it isn't just the four missions.

(
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=52148.0) Here's the link for the campaign thread. Fortune Hunters and Drums of War both clock in at around 20-30 missions and offer a good overview of all the ships the mod has to offer. Some of the more (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHRvxBtS_Ug&feature=related) recent campaigns are much shorter but take full advantage of the latest source code enhancements and TBP version.

A question about the fan campaigns (the ones included in the SCP installer/launcher, but any others too): are they basically more of the same, i.e. great for people who love the original game and want more Freespacey goodness, or are there some that go beyond what Freespace 2 does in remarkable ways?

You might want to wait on playing Inferno Release 1, an updated version is going to be released alongside Inferno Release 2 which is coming near the end of this year.

Most, for instance Derelict and Procyon Insurgency, are more of the same, but not in a bad way of course. Some of them, like Vassago's Dirge and the Blue Planet series, are definitely a cut above the original game though.
