Actually Stalin and Hitler were pretty close in terms of victims. Hitler killed about 16 million, Stalin at least 20.
The biggest killer was actually Mao (some 60 million people died as a result of his policies), and ironically he still enjoys a good reputation in the west - we've probably all seen the Mao shirts, and other memorabilia

Punishing people from sympathy is...I don't even know. Also, note their use of the word "intolerable." I hate it. Tolerance is one of the great virtues, and when somones claim that something is "intolerable," it's a comment on the speaker, not the subject.

Von Trier, as has been said, is a troll. He's a talented troll, but he'd do anything to get a reaction, and pulling the Adolf card is an easy way of doing this.
Do I think that the Cannes crowd over-reacted? Definitely. At the same time, von Trier made his troll's nest, he can sleep in it. He can't keep trolling for reactions and then be surprised if there are reactions.
