:wot: The possibilities here look grim... I think our best hope lies with Ubi, seeing as they're at least a halfway decent publisher.
EA - Dear sweet lord, NO. If this occurs, we as a people have a patriotic duty to rise up and slay EA before they turn Thief into another Madden NFL knockoff.
SquareEnix - Almost as bad as EA; they'll turn Garrett into an emo-teen fuckwit with a 50 meter no-daichi and fights the {insert evil bastard corporation/government/anything here} with his little emo buddies. They'll also make Viktoria into more of a sex symbol than she already is. I say "more" because she's already a naked Pagan wood daemon thingy.
Warner Bros - Yes, we want some moronic early-morning cartoon characters from the 50's in our beloved Thief. (for those of you who lack the humor gland, that's called "sarcasm")

that's a slightly cliched view of most of those companies. EA would never make another Thief, because it's not financially viable to make one per year.

Well at least there's a chance Thief will forever stay as the Trilogy as it was originally supposed to be.
Always look at the bright side of life :)

I honestly think that Ubisoft has been producing some quality (console) games of late, although we are getting carried away with ourselves here, imagine how the crowd technology introduced in Assasin's Creed could be implemented in thief...

What? There was a third installment to follow the originals? Oh, you must mean that whole TDS business!:laff:
Seriously though, I agree. Eidos appears to be circling the drain. I was momentarily excited about the prospect of both a Deus Ex 3 and a Thief 4. I'll accept those dreams as dead. After all, as much as we love Thief, any company that ever tries to pick it up is a company that seeks to ride the coattails of *someone else*.
By definition, a creative person would create something new. So what is the person that tries to recreate the works of geniuses? Greedy? Delusional?
We would need a Peter Jackson of the gaming industry, and I just doubt that'll ever happen. I'm content with the hard work and progress of this very community. I've never seen such a self-sufficient group of fans surrounding a video game, and that's my ray of hope.
...and if Ubisoft could get their heads out of their cracks for a minute or two, maybe they could put some of their misguided talent to good use. Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed were close, but not nearly close enough. I mean, come on... Creed failed on the most basic principles and ideologies of game design, despite all it managed to do right. I suppose that's a whole other can o' worms though.

You're right, but we all will be happy if they announce Thief 4, won't we. :)

Speaking for myself, I'd be a lot more excited about news along the lines of "The Dark Mod released today, taffers celebrate in the streets" or (maybe even better) "taffers reverse-engineer Dark Engine, brush and polygon limits lifted".
Thief 4, I give it 40% of not sucking, and 10% of living up to the legacy of the first two games.

There's a lot of bad you can say about EA, but I've had opportunity to work for developer who is an EA's contractor, and I must say the EA guys have been actually helpful. Little time pressure, useful design insight, nonoffensive marketing. Admittedly, their playtesters seemed a little clueless. Right now, EA are trying to improve their image, which means they have an incentive to give an "uncommon" project a chance. They did publish Mirror's Edge, after all.
On the other hand, I've heard some unfavourable rumours about Ubi recently. This is a bit of disappointment to me, because I've hoped they would buy or found a local gamedev studio one day, like they did in Romania.
By the way, not that I want to curb your enthusiasm, but from what I've heard so far, nobody's really interested in Thief as a "franchise". If someone buys Eidos, they may just put Thief on shelf (unless there's already one in works, in which case they will probably wait until the end of preproduction and then put it on shelf).

you're blind optimism makes me sick! ;)
I wouldn't be happy when, or at this point rather
if, they announce it, I'd be nervous considering the odds are bad that it will even be on par with TDS.
I've said it before that I wouldn't be surprised if it went third person only, if ubi buys them I'd be surprised if it didn't, should it even get made.
