Prohibition wasn't replaced with a universal license to consume, regardless of age, location or activity. Booze is still very much prohibited for many people and in in many situations. It is highly regulated. I call false equivalent.
The war on drugs is a bit more of a fair comparison in that drugs (like guns) are not going away. It fails as a comparison for you in that the lasting answer to the drug problem is regulation of supply, access and use.
Which is what we need for firearms but the most enthusiastic enthusiasts consistently oppose any regulation. So while advocates of gun control are willing to allow that guns aren't going away, enthusiasts seem unwilling to allow them to be controlled in ANY way whatsoever.
