I also would like to see them bring in Tom Bombadil and perhaps some of the other Norse myth inspired sequences and characters.
I'd rather see Jackson incorporate Beorn the Berserker than Bombadil. Beorn always has been one of my favorite Tolkien characters.

Tolkien's
The Hobbit doesn't address any of this because the book was written before
Lord of the Rings; the film
Hobbit will need to address (or, most likely, handwave) this in some way or many audience members will find this odd and inconsistent.
Agreed. Though I always wondered exactly
when Sauron started actively searching for the One Ring. I rather had the impression that Sauron was just lurking somewhere in the ether, gaining strength until he could manifest himself and start creating minions specifically for the purpose of finding his Ring again and wasn't able to manifest himself until around the time of the Fellowship story. For me, that pretty much explained (in retrospect) how Bilbo could've worn the Ring without Sauron making an attempt to reclaim it. Of course, it's been a long time since I've read the books, so I could have everything bassackwards.

Or do you think that Frodo's reaction to putting on the ring is only what it is because he knows it's the One Ring?
No, I think it's because by the time LoTR starts Sauron has started to regain some of his power. They needn't have the Eye in The Hobbit but they should certainly stick to the "shadow world" that one enters when putting the ring on.

Actually if you recall, Bilbo puts the ring on at the start of Fellowship, the film, without feeling any ill effects whatsoever, he thinks it's a "bit of fun". Frodo only gets terrible visions later when Sauron and the nazgul are actively searching for the ring.

However it works we're agreed that the state it puts Frodo in is not a feature of the Ring, but rather a consequence of Sauron and crew deciding to look for it.
Quite how they'll get this across in The Hobbit I don't know.

Intriguingly it's been pointed out to me that Bilbo, when using the Ring in Mirkwood, is in fact closer in physical location to Sauron himself (in his guise as the Necromancer of Dol Guldur) than Frodo was for most of LotR.

Perhaps they'll touch on that. I wouldn't be surprised if wizards driving Sauron out of his hidey-hole is filmed for this, it's relevant enough, and action-packed enough to warrant it, so they could connect that to the Bilbo story through some kind of ring visions...

Apparently young Benedict Cumberbatch is to play both Smaug and the Necromancer, so you could well be correct.

I thought it was already confirmed that this would be in the film?

There's been a lot of back and forth about that. When they were saying that The Hobbit would be the entire book, and the second 'bridge film' was going to be stuff from the Appendices, it was rumoured that the White Council expelling the Necromancer from Dol Goldur was going to be a big part of the bridge. But now I believe they've settled on splitting The Hobbit across two films, and whether the White Council stuff gets added in somewhere is unknown (though the shots of Galadriel in Rivendell implies that it is).
